Thanks, I took your advise and inserted disk 1, but now Safari doesn't work any more. More help would be appreciated

Ok I'm still not sure which OSX version you're using. But I'd recommend a SAFE boot & repair permissions. This may well overcome your Safari issue. 2 links which are roughly about the same thing: 1. SAFE Boot & Repair Permissions, & 2. Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
