connection problems i am using limewire basic 4.8.1 windows xp swervice pack 2 512 mb ram amd 2100 d-link dls-504g router iinet 8mb dsl i have been extremely happy with limewire up to date now the program simply wont connect, i have done a factory reset on my router tried forwarding the relevant ports both manually and automatically and even dropping the firewall to no avail, i have read through this forum and have found nothing uselful, is there suumfin i am missing or is this a router/isp problem, becoz i have been having similar problems with rival p2p programs thanx btw, yes im an irc user hence all the shorthand, sorry, old habits... |
I use the same router as you (except I use a mac.) I was forced to forward a port for LW. Make sure you do it properly. The most important step is the 1st one, setting up a static ip. If this isn't done correctly then the port forwarding won't work after your external ip address changes. Steps: 1. Set up a Static ip 2. Forward a port; intructions for steps 1 & 2 here: http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm (see bottom left of page for your model.) I would recommend doing a separate port forwarding for both TCP & UDP. 3. Within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that. * Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) You can double-check your port forwarding with this test: Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. If you can't get to the page then the port forwarding probably needs to be redone. |
problem is it was working perfectly before, however this and other p2p software isnt, im thinking i might have accidentally changed a setting... i do run 2 firewalls, but only the router firewall and xp firewall, is this a problem ? how hard is it to add other better firewalls to the mix as i get a lot of packet kiddies on irc |
It's fine to run NAT router & a softw firewall together. I was refering to not using 2 softw firewalls. There apparently are much better ones out there than XP's firewall. I'm not the one to ask for recommendations. Try the test page link at the bottom of my previous post. If you can't reach the site then it's either your router or isp probably at fault. Without port forwarding you may still be able to connect but will partially block LW. |
hmmm i couldnt even get the test page to come up, i have been having a few problems with connections and bringing up certain web pages, im not fully up to speed with dsl and my router yet, my isp (iinet) has even admitted to having services problems due to upgrading their services but wont offer a discount whilst this is happening. i think they think im a complete idiot and its an IE fault or sumfin else I mite try ur original suggestion and tinker with the router help manual and ring iinet again, thanx for ur help all the same |
Gadam, you use iinet. lol :D No wonder we have the same router. Yep I think port forwarding is the way to go. Unfortunately the DI-Links don't appear to utilise UPnP which would make port forwarding unnecessary. I posted my own instructions on the forum for the DI-Link 504G but that is only for the Mac. |
i think i mite try to manually configure it anyway, and then if it doesnt work ring them and abuse them again, i seem to be having a lot of problems connecting to servers either for downloading or web browsing, and they have admitted service faults... *waves fists around* what happened to the good old days of iinet |
Manual port forwarding IS the way to go! Once done properly it should be fine. Yes I had similar problems late last year & earlier this year with service going down for same reasons. Upgrading of exchanges & lines between here & the main service point. A total PITA. I was forced to use dial up over that time. Did they tell you that you can use dial up over those times? And I 'think' I was offered a discount at one point in time due to excessive loss over a week or so. I can't remember. |
i didnt know about the dial up, i knew about the service difficulties, my mate had 2 go on dial up, they offered me half price once, but wouldnt do it again despite admitting they were doing service upgrades, i mite have 2 be a lil more forceful considering im paying for an unreliable resource |
