PROBLEMS STAYING CONNECTED - doesn't appear to be firewall issue  Limewire 4.9.7 was working just fine - could walk away from the computer for an hour and it would still be downloading and searching when I got back. A few days ago, all of a sudden everytime I walk away from it even for just a few mins, I get that error message too, saying I'm not connected, and there are no longer ANY green bars - all are red. I have to click - File - Connect to get back on. It picks up again, but I should be able to at least go potty without losing download progress, especially when it was FINE just a few days ago. And adding to the problem, when I do get back, other files won't reconnect - they just keep saying "waiting for stable connections", but when I do the search, the files are right there with more than a dozen users. I will click them in the search window to start downloading again (has broken file icon by now) and it says Already Downloading, but that's no longer true. And I get no message about firewall and since no changes were made and it was working fine for weeks only until only days ago, that doesn't appear to be the problem. The only way for me to get those downloads is to delete them from the download window, and the library both, then start All Over Again :(. Again, there were no problems only a few days ago, and I've changed nothing in the firewall programs, so there's no Obvious reason I can see for the problem. I even tried updating to the latest version, Limewire 4.9.11 and nothing changed (and yes, tried rebooting too). Also, I tried running virus scan from the website just to keep Internet Explorer open and connected, but still after only a couple of mins, IE is still working uninterrupted but LimeWire is not (so apparently the problem is not my internet connection). Nothing seems to correct this. Can someone help please????? Please?? Thanks in advance! |
This may or may not help but try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire or if you're a mac user you'll find them here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire OR Linux: ~/.limewire |
The new betas seem to have a problem with loosing conections I sent in a stack trace when the same happend to me. Try what The lord sugested if it helps let us know. Latter Grandpa |
 I'm using Windows XP SP2 (updates are current). Don't know what my Java version is - not quite that computer literate. So I haven't tried step 1. Tried step 2 - No Change. Step 3 - says not to use on versions later than 4.4, and I've updated to 4.9.11 (I was using 4.9.7 when it started), so haven't tried that. Step 4 - No Change Step 5 - Already logged on as Owner/Admin The exact error message is as follows: "ERROR! Your machine does not appear to have an active internet connection or a firewall is blocking Limewire from accessing the internet. Limewire will automatically keep trying to connect you to the network unless you select "Disconnect" from the File menu." Again, it's puzzling because I changed nothing with the firewalls and Lime was running perfectly for weeks until a few days ago, though I did update virus def's a few days ago. But it will connect and work fine - until I leave it alone for a few mins, then it pops up that error message, then of course the files that were downloading are now corrupt and I have to start all over again, as mentioned in the initial post. That's what doesn't make sense. Any other ideas? Should I try using an older version (can I get one if yes)? Thanks  |
Are you using a router |
were can u get an older version of limewire? everytime i try dling the 4.8.1 setup it just starts installing 4.9.7 and i tried download.com too. is it possible to get an older version? sry for intruding in your problem >.< |
 Ok, I don't know about the router, but I have additional info that might help further evaluate the cause. It seems to be connected to the monitor, whether it's Lime's software or a setting on my computer that needs to be readjusted I don't know. Hopefully someone can help, please. So here's what else I tried: In Control Panel, Display Options: - Tried just turning off the option that the computer would shut off after being idle. No Change. - Tried turning off screensaver. Seemed ok, until I turned off the monitor so the image wouldn't burn into my screen (computer still on and connected) [this time, I noticed that's when those connection problems came up again - when the screensaver kicked in or the monitor was turned off.] - Left the screensaver off, monitor on and it's been fine for almost half an hour. So, I am wondering how to make it ok to shut off the monitor or let the screensaver run (thus saving my monitor) without interrupting the Limewire software - how to not have those connection problems anymore just because of the monitor. Any help please????? Thank you very much! ps. to Mor; no problem - if this can't be resolved, I might be looking to install an older version myself, so it's all related. Thanks. |
One other quick question - what does "Waiting for Stable Connections" mean exactly? I've seen all the other stuff defined in the FAQ's/manual, but not this particular phrase. I don't know if that particular phrase is related to the problem I'm having or if it is something unrelated, more having to do with hosts or what. Thank you very much in advance. |
Ahh yes the old video/graphics issue you might check out the link below these people were not having the exact same problem but I think it is the same problem so the solutions may help. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=39600 Also you may want to try configuring your screen saver to none IE right click on your screen click on properties scroll your options for scren saver and chose none and see if that fixes the problem. If you choose the option of none it will just have a black screen when the screen saver comes on thus no image to burn into your screen. Latter Grandpa |
Later, I will try to do a restore for at least a week ago (after I get everything backed up). The others didn't seem to apply. As for the screensaver, it doesn't matter if it uses a blank screen for a saver - still the same problem. So far, it seems the only way to not lose the connection is keep the monitor on and the screensaver off altogether, but that's bad for the monitor. Will post again later after I get to try the back up and restore. In the meantime, if any other ideas come to mind, please feel free to share. Would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Edit: Even just turning the power off the monitor manually still causes the same problems. Doesn't make sense...???  |
What else can I do now? Grandpa, selecting "none" in the screensaver is actually how you turn it off, on XP SP2 anyway. Selecting "Blank" I think is what you meant. I've tried that and a few other things. Here's the updated attempts - I could really use some help here since nothing is working. Ok. I've tried using system restore to before the problem started. No Change. I've tried restoring back to before I put Lime in and then reinstalled it - No Change. I tried backing up everything I wanted to keep, formatting the hard drive and loading everything all over again - after the essentials (office, etc.) I only loaded Lime. Still No Change. I tried using the "Blank" screensaver, as suggested by Grandpa. No Change. It seems that no matter what I try, if I need to walk away from the machine or even just stop pressing keys and stuff for several mins, I lose all my Lime connections/hosts. And as mentioned before, I even tried leaving another internet program running just to confirm the internet connection wasn't lost - and it wasn't - even the internet connection timer was uninterrupted. The other program continued just fine, but Lime stopped connecting. Is there maybe some new setting I don't see that disconnects you from the hosts if you're idle for several mins? Sigh. I know I had this same problem about a year ago when first using Lime and it was resolved, but I can't recall the solution. I even set Norton Security to allow all connections from Lime. Still, No Change. And the Windows firewall is setup exactly as directed, making those allowances for Gnutella - I double checked. And again, I can connect and download, but just can't let the computer idle for a few mins - not even talking about hours, just several mins. Can anyone please help?? Please? Thank you very much. |
ctimbers1 there are no settings that I know of that would create your problem but the newer versions of LW do drop to 1 connection when Idle. I think some people were having some problems with this feature. I see there is a new beta out 4.9.13 you might want to give it a try and see if it works any better for you the link below will take you there. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=42373 |
ctimbers1 Norton will be sufficient! Disable your XP firewall: go to the control panel, double click on Windoze Firewall, check the disable box. Norton will still offer you sufficient protection. Norton & XP firewall have been known to interfere with each other! |
