At home works, at school doesn't

I'm running XP Pro SP2, firewall enabled but exceptions already made for Limewire. The only Norton program I have is the school-required Symantec Antivirus.

I've been trying to connect with several diff programs at school (Shareaza, Ares Gold, etc.) Limewire is the only one that will even connect when I'm at school, but a search for "britney" turns up 2 results when I should have hundreds.

I went home for the weekend, and everything works fine. I'm on dial-up at home though, so there's no point

Several friends can get other p2p programs to run on their comps at school. But some, like me, can't. Gaaah.

Anyone know anything about the way that connections are set up/blocked/whatever at universities??

Nowadays most schools block p2p sharing totally. So you're lucky you can connect. They may also use filters to limit speeds. Here's an example of how a p2p bandwidth shaper can work: Bandwidth Shaper Sample - typical of how some schools & ISP's use it (click on link) ie: giving priority to net surfing & low priorities to p2p sharing. But there's different techniques they may use.

You could try a different port. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change the listening port. Here's some to try: 1111, 3500, 4008, 1203, 80, 20282, 22817, 10000, 443, 40475. And press apply after changing it. I'm not sure but you might need to re-open LW. In any case, go to menu bar, File>Disconnect. Wait a minute. Then File>Connect. Tell us how you go.

You can also try disabling ultrapeer capabilities which is under Tools>Options>Speed
