Nowadays most universities either block or filter p2p sharing because it uses up so much bandwidth.

Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
4. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
5. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

That means the port is being blocked. Port 6346 is the default port LW uses to connect to the gnutella network.

Did you confugure XP's firewall?

Try a different port. Try each of these one by one: 1111, 3500, 4008, 80, 1203, 10000, 15189, 20282, 22817, 443, 34599, 40475.

ie: Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change listening port from 6346 to one of the above & press apply button. I'm not sure whether you need to relaunch LW with each change. Give each one "at least" 15 mins to connect.

Failing this you might need to try a proxy of some type. But proxies might not necessarily work & can be tiresome to set up.

wot do i configure the xp firewall to do?

Lord of the Rings November 19th, 2005 12:01 PM

You'd need to set your XP firewall port the same as LW is using. Sorry an extra step I forgot about.

BTW try port 80 1st, I believe it might be your best chance. Another one to try is 64049

I've no experience with proxies but there's been some user feedback. A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 - 3 which have links to alternative instructions & various types of proxies. Proxies need patience as you apparently need to try many, many (proxy addresses) before you find one that works.
