major horrible connection problems!!! I’m having some MAJOR HORRIBLE PROBLEMS when trying to connect to LimeWire!! Our computer pretty much keeled over just before Christmas (due to one of our family friends). We had to reinstall everything however, I now find I’m having some horrible connection problems with LimeWire. I’m pretty much unsure what exactly it could be but we have Norton 2005 installed / connect via broadband / have windows xp home and have windows service pack 2 installed. I have a sneaky suspicion it could have something to do with the firewall only because prior to this our ‘WINDOWS SECURITY CENTER’ gave us two options of turning the windows firewall on and off. We always turned it off and relied on our Norton personal firewall however, NOW it states in the security center, under FIREWALL ‘Norton internet security is currently on’ with the green button on however, when you go into the windows firewall options it states that the windows firewall is off … so I don’t know. I have permitted limewire and javaw through nortons personal firewall program thing. Also, it may be this service pack 2 because I’m pretty sure we had only service pack 1 before it all crashed. I guess this is just my last resort for help due to the fact that it now states I’m behind a firewall in limewire and takes forever to find anywhere to download a file from..it takes forever to download a file whether it be small or large ..with the larger files it would download 30+ kb/s now its like 4/5 kb/s and struggles staying with a single host. I’d just turn off ALL firewalls if Norton didn’t scare me with the evil truth of hacking… Thanks for any help. |
Hi gilmour59, Read the sticky (in red) at the top of this section. It has so many tips & fixes for connection probs. Your thing might be due to sp2 (bloody pita), there are various patches you can get so that it lets p2p work. But first, go through the sticky & see if you find a fix there;) **You shouldn't run Win & Norton firewalls together, it just won't work. Get rid of the Win:D |
Hi, thanks for the reply but I've tried everything in the sticky section and still Its not connecting as it should. What I really don't get is that if I turn off windows xp firewall and norton firewall I'm still stuck wth LW telling me I'm STILL firewall protected?? The more I think about this the more i think service pack 2 has something to do with it but nothing I tried related to helping the possible cause actually helped the problem...frustrated!! |
Did you change your modem/router during all the upheaval:D ? Leave Win firewall off & just use Norton. Are you sure it's configured to allow LW access? Here's a link to the sp2 patch that I used, there are 3rd party ones around if you'd prefer not to use Micro$oft;) : http://support.microsoft.com/default...5bLN%5d;884020 See how you go with it, post back here if it's no good! |
sorry about the double post :D I made sure that i took win firewall off and kept nortons on .. i've config'd to permit limewire through done that a few hours ago. and thank you for the sp2 fix however, it doesnt seem to have done a things difference. A qstn of yours that has got me a lil curious though is 'Did you change your modem/router during all the upheaval ?' what do you mean?? I'm not too sure if i have actually.. I've got a Speedtouch536 adsl modem and when checking the configuration on it (by clicking http://10.0.0.138) i noticed in the intrusion detection part the only port that had any such intrusion was that of udp_null_port in which it stated 23 intrusions compared to the others of none. ... I don't know if this helps you in helping me.. but it was just something i noticed. |
Ok, your modem does have a built-in firewall. This might be the cause of your probs. I'm not sure about port forwarding through it as the portforward site doesn't have your modem on it's list. But...it does use UPnP. So, if your UPnP is enabled within the modem you'll have to enable it in LW too. Go tools > options > advanced > firewall config & tick 'use UPnP'. Now click on apply. Do this test: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ Does it work? |
yeah, the test says it works ... but im still having really horrible problems having any file download through limewire. |
Did you enable UPnP? |
yup the upnp is enabled in speedtouch and its checked in limewire. |
And is your connection any better (sometimes it takes a while ie 1/2 hour to settle down) or is it connection and downloads that are stuffed? |
