major horrible connection problems!!!

I’m having some MAJOR HORRIBLE PROBLEMS when trying to connect to LimeWire!!

Our computer pretty much keeled over just before Christmas (due to one of our family friends). We had to reinstall everything however, I now find I’m having some horrible connection problems with LimeWire.

I’m pretty much unsure what exactly it could be but we have Norton 2005 installed / connect via broadband / have windows xp home and have windows service pack 2 installed. I have a sneaky suspicion it could have something to do with the firewall only because prior to this our ‘WINDOWS SECURITY CENTER’ gave us two options of turning the windows firewall on and off. We always turned it off and relied on our Norton personal firewall however, NOW it states in the security center, under FIREWALL ‘Norton internet security is currently on’ with the green button on however, when you go into the windows firewall options it states that the windows firewall is off … so I don’t know. I have permitted limewire and javaw through nortons personal firewall program thing. Also, it may be this service pack 2 because I’m pretty sure we had only service pack 1 before it all crashed.

I guess this is just my last resort for help due to the fact that it now states I’m behind a firewall in limewire and takes forever to find anywhere to download a file from..it takes forever to download a file whether it be small or large ..with the larger files it would download 30+ kb/s now its like 4/5 kb/s and struggles staying with a single host. I’d just turn off ALL firewalls if Norton didn’t scare me with the evil truth of hacking…

Thanks for any help.

Hi gilmour59,
Read the sticky (in red) at the top of this section. It has so many tips & fixes for connection probs. Your thing might be due to sp2 (bloody pita), there are various patches you can get so that it lets p2p work. But first, go through the sticky & see if you find a fix there;)

**You shouldn't run Win & Norton firewalls together, it just won't work. Get rid of the Win:D

gilmour59 January 13th, 2006 11:09 PM

Hi, thanks for the reply but I've tried everything in the sticky section and still Its not connecting as it should.

What I really don't get is that if I turn off windows xp firewall and norton firewall I'm still stuck wth LW telling me I'm STILL firewall protected??

The more I think about this the more i think service pack 2 has something to do with it but nothing I tried related to helping the possible cause actually helped the problem...frustrated!!

Did you change your modem/router during all the upheaval:D ?

Leave Win firewall off & just use Norton. Are you sure it's configured to allow LW access?

Here's a link to the sp2 patch that I used, there are 3rd party ones around if you'd prefer not to use Micro$oft;) :

See how you go with it, post back here if it's no good!

gilmour59 January 14th, 2006 12:45 AM

sorry about the double post :D

I made sure that i took win firewall off and kept nortons on .. i've config'd to permit limewire through done that a few hours ago. and thank you for the sp2 fix however, it doesnt seem to have done a things difference.

A qstn of yours that has got me a lil curious though is 'Did you change your modem/router during all the upheaval ?' what do you mean?? I'm not too sure if i have actually..

I've got a Speedtouch536 adsl modem and when checking the configuration on it (by clicking http://10.0.0.138) i noticed in the intrusion detection part the only port that had any such intrusion was that of udp_null_port in which it stated 23 intrusions compared to the others of none. ... I don't know if this helps you in helping me.. but it was just something i noticed.

Ok, your modem does have a built-in firewall. This might be the cause of your probs. I'm not sure about port forwarding through it as the portforward site doesn't have your modem on it's list.

But...it does use UPnP. So, if your UPnP is enabled within the modem you'll have to enable it in LW too. Go tools > options > advanced > firewall config & tick 'use UPnP'. Now click on apply.

Do this test:
http://www3.limewire.com:6346/

Does it work?

gilmour59 January 14th, 2006 01:30 AM

yeah, the test says it works ... but im still having really horrible problems having any file download through limewire.

birdy January 14th, 2006 01:31 AM

Did you enable UPnP?

gilmour59 January 14th, 2006 01:33 AM

yup the upnp is enabled in speedtouch and its checked in limewire.

birdy January 14th, 2006 01:40 AM

And is your connection any better (sometimes it takes a while ie 1/2 hour to settle down) or is it connection and downloads that are stuffed?

gilmour59 January 14th, 2006 01:46 AM

theres really no problem at all outside of limewire with downloading. We connect to the internet great. However, when it comes to limewire itself its like it now struggles to find any hosts for any files and when it finally does it struggles to keep the host where it once could have up to 8+ hosts and download up to 28+kb/s with limewire. As much as I love limewire I'm kind of thinking of trying another program... just to see if its the same. Cause we really have no problem outside of limewire with downloading / connecting and surfing the net etc.

You have by far one of the most difficult modem/routers I have ever seen to set up. Below is a link to there web site if it were me I would go to there support page and ask them how to set it up. I looked at the user guide 10MB in size and I still am confused on how to set it up.

birdy January 14th, 2006 01:56 AM

Sorry, I meant your connection within LW. Are you still firewalled? Can anyone download from you?

what's your set up:
O/System
Connection type
LW & Java version (help > about LW & it'll tell you)
We know you're modem's a speedtouch 536
Only the Norton firewall that's been configured??
ISP
Where you connect from (home, work etc)
Is this your first try with LW

birdy January 14th, 2006 02:00 AM

Grandpa,
That user guide just made me cry. Maybe you can help this poor guy out cos I'm totally confused. I'll need to be excused...my brain is full.

gilmour59 January 14th, 2006 04:57 AM

yeah, the connection within lw is still firewalled... its really annoying.

what's your set up:
O/System -----------> WINDOWS XP HOME
Connection type -------------> UM..BROADBAND ADSL ?
LW & Java version (help > about LW & it'll tell you) ------> JAVA 1.5.0 AND LIMEWIRE 4.10

We know you're modem's a speedtouch 536
Only the Norton firewall that's been configured??----> YEAH, NOW I DID WINDOWS XP FIREWALL BUT WITH NO CHANGE I TURNED IT BACK OFF AND DELETED THE GNUTELLA AND JAVA CHANGES TO. SO YEAH, CURRENTLY ONLY NORTON.

ISP -----------> TELSTRA, BIGPOND

Where you connect from (home, work etc) ---> HOME
Is this your first try with LW ---> NO, have used it many a time before.

** I've reinstalled my modem to see if that would help and trully no change.

A few questions though, if you could help.. does Norton normally work alongside windows firewall ?? like if you turn windows firewall off will it still normally tell you that it can still see your using nortons firewall.? and also if i add gnutella to my 'game and application sharing' found in my speedtouch options section...will this help or hinder my efforts in connecting to limewire??

thanks for all your help to date guys. :)

There is one thing I would like you to do. I need to know if you have Norton configured correctly the only way I know of doing this without being there is to un install Norton. What you can do is go to the link below and download Avast anti virus it is free save it to your hard drive then un install Norton then install Avast and turn on Windows firewall. Now with that done follow the instructions below and un install Java and LimeWire.

When you re install if the windows firewall is blocking LimeWire it should pop up and ask if you want to allow it to connect to the Internet click allow if it does. if the problem still exist after this is done then the problem has to be elsewhere like you modem or ISP etc.

Don't get me wrong I think Norton is a good program I just want to see if that is the problem. You can re install it after you run a couple of test.

You will need to install Java and LimeWire manually First go to the first link. You can find Links to java in there Download Java to your hard drive by putting a mark in the save to disc box. Save it to my documents or wherever you save downloads from the internet. Do the same with LimeWire the second link will take you there.

Now with that done click on start then control panel add/remove programs and see if Java is listed on the list if it is uninstall it. Do the same with LimeWire if the un installers were not loaded you may have to manually delete the files. But in most cases this is not necessary.

Now click on the Java installer you saved to your hard drive and follow the instructions after you have completed that do the same with LimeWire.

Please post back and let us know if it worked. If it did not I will give further instructions on manually deleting Java and LimeWire.

Hey ,
My Limewire is showing that a Firewall has been detected, although my XP Firewall is off and I have even tried the link http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ and the test worked. But my limewire still has the same message and the icon of the firewall detection. SOS
Thanx
