i just downloaded limewire for windows last week, and for the first few days it worked great. then for the past few days i have not been able to keep a connection. and if i do get any connection, it is only 1 bar and i can't do anything on limewire. does anyone have any suggestions? i tried downloading both versions already for windows . . . please help

Did you check through this Connection problems? Check here first!

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.

Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire (sample image included.)

I have Firewalls enabled, but I followed the steps to free up Limewire(Gnutella)
Ram is 512 MB
Free space is 47.69 GB (which it said that 85% is free)
use dialup through the University of Toledo and other computers share same connection
accessing it from home
Versions: LW - 4.10.5
Java - 1.4.2_05
no router, but don't know what you mean by modem: if it means what kind of computer it is a Compaq Notebook Model: Presario R3000

Then i tried to delete the file that you listed, but could not find anything in my search engine that had Application Data in the details so i did not delete anything. Let me know if you need any other info and hopefully this helps

Try step #2 1st. If you can't find .limewire then try step #3. To find limewire, you need to turn on the option to show hidden files & folders before you search. There's a sample image at the bottom of the page.

That sounds odd. Dial up connection thru a university? Are you sure it's dial up?

A modem is the device that connects you to the internet. A dial up modem connects to the telephone line & your computer. You may have an internal modem or external or ...

okay, i found that the modem is called Agere Systems AC'97 modem (COM4)

and i tried step 2 and found the .limewire and deleted it. then restarted my computer, but don't see a change in connection. and i do think it is dial-up . . . have telephone line plugged into computer and it dials into the phone number for UT.

It looks like a dial up modem driver to me too.

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

You said you have firewalls configured. You should only run one firewall. Running 2 will in fact decrease your security because they won't function normally. So disable one of them. XP's firewall isn't that good so you might want to disable that one.

What other utilities do you have such as anti-virus, spyware, etc.?

When you say other computers are sharing the one connection, then since dial up is 56 kbps or about 6-7 KB/s in total up & down bandwidth combined, if you're sharing it, then there might not be enough left for LW to connect. Are there any other people using p2p programs on the same connection?

Open LW, set the option under connections to not connect after system startup. Tools>Options>Connections. Make sure LW is not trying to connect. Go to menu bar, File>Disconnect. Then wait 10 mins or so, then go to menu bar, File>Connect. Give it lots of time to try to connect. If no good, close LW & try again.

i tried the link in your reply and it says page cannot be displayed, so i tried to refresh the page and nothing happened. i'm gonna look at the firewalls and i also have norton antivirus on my computer. and about the other computers, i'm just assuming that since it is thru a college that others are using the same server and same dialup number.

There's a chance your school blocked LW after they detected it being used. Strange you could connect thru port 6346 one moment but can't the next. For Norton Firewall, see Configuring Norton Internet Security

To disable your XP firewall, see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...842#post178842 as there's more than one technique depending on how you're set up.

My guess is the problem is your firewall. But if you set things up & still problems then see below. Last thing to try would be a proxy. But proxies are time consuming to set up & find one that works.

What you could try doing is, changing the port LW uses. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change the option from upnp to manual port forwarding & change the port from 6346 to something like 80 or 64049 or 34599 for example. But you'd need to disconnect from the file menu & try again after such a change. You'd also need to change the port options in your firewall.
