Dum Dum DUum : how to block limewire/gnutella I know this is going to upset many of you here, but I want/need to block Limewire/Gnutella on my home network. I'm running the WRT54G router, version 2. In my QOS Policy, I have 6346-6355 and 5634 blocked. I also blocked (for the hell of it) pokemon.com from working (anime makes me vomit), and that does work. However LimeWire works without a hitch. Network performance is highly degraded because of Gnutella/Limewire, how to I block it? LimeWire (Im running the Linux version as a test on my machine) says "Firewall Detected" but I can still download various copyrighted material without any connection problems. I get the sense that limewire can work around firewalls, which is neat and cool, but I can barly play a game of Quake 3 on an internet connection that I alone pay for. Any tips? Thank you. |
sounds like the most direct way would be to find the offending user and smash their computer with a baseball bat...I mean really, it is YOUR network, so make 'em follow the rulez |
Definatly, but there my college friends, and I'd love to provide them with anything else they need in terms of network access, considering that the school campus network (the only other alternative) is horrendous. Im reupgrading to the ddwrt firmware, maybe I can have better luck with that. Does gnutella use any other ports? I imagine the new firmware will have support for more than 2 port range blocks. |
read this: http://wiki.openwrt.org/MiniHowtos/QoSHowto if you can make heads or tails of it, you've got my admiration.. try googling "blocking Limewire".... I have no experience with blocking, or tunneling, gnutella, as I've never had to do it before... also, since yur running a linux machine, perhaps you can use it as a gateway, and firewall it and run a 'rope': http://www.lowth.com/p2pwall/ (though that article is a tad out of date, and I suspect the algorithm is also out of date) |
