Unhappy one bar only...optimum online

I have read several threads about optimum online and connection problems. I have followed the advice of changing the port and have done so, to 64049 it went to three bars for about 10 minutes and back to one.

I have
Windows XP
Pentium 4
Optimum online (Brooklyn)
The test for 6346 worked

I am not sure what to do I have tried several methods without any luck. What can I do?? Please help

Apparently they have started monitoring bandwidth usage you are not the first to report recently that after changing ports you could get a good connection then it would drop after a few minutes. This suggest to me they are monitoring all ports and as soon as they see excessive bandwidth usage they are shaping or blocking that port.

If it were me I would call Optimum and ask them if they were going to continue their policy of blocking P2P. If they say they are not blocking or that it is LimeWires problem. I would then tell them that I no longer needed there service and to please cancel my subscription. Their response will probably be why. I would then tell them that I will be getting a service that works with P2P apps. After all there is no reason to pay for something that I can not use. Especially when there are other ISP that don't block or filter P2P apps and that do work with LimeWire.

What if when I say I want to cancel my service, then they say ok fine. But I like having OOL. It's fast and reliable. I just don't like that they're blocking p2p sites but that's no reason for me to cancel their service completely. I might not sound like a die-hard Lw fan and I apoligize for that, but I would like to keep my OOL as well as have Lw but if I had to choose one, it would be OOL.

To me it wouldn't be which I preferred. It would be the fact that I pay for high speed Internet and I am not getting what I paid for. There are allot of other choices out there that don't limit what you can use it for. They give you what you paid for. There is DSL which is very competitively priced with cable. Just one question why do you need high speed Internet so that a page loaders 4 sec faster. Well you can do that with 512k DSL probably for less money and use LimeWire at the same time.

Thanks Grandpa, I did not call because I don't want to terminate my service since I have a package with them and since my LW has a full connnection (though it still lags but works) I am going to monitor what happens. I appreciate your time

When I signed up for OOL I got a free router offer and 12 months of OOL. I didn't know that I wouldn't be able to use Lw. I can't cancel now because I would have to pay a huge termination fee.

Does it say anywhere in there service agreement that you can't use P2P. If it doesn't then they are not supplying the services you paid for and unless they do they can not charge you a termination fee.

Okay I have some progress...I use port 64049 and it is all green and the "mysterious firewall" goes away but make sure you are not behind AOL's mcaffee firewall. I was and disabled it during my trial and error I am trying to find a solution to have it enabled and use LW so there isn't a problem between them. Good luck let me know if anyone finds any solutions thanks
