if 'your test worked" should I still reinstall?

Hi,
First time poster :-) thanks in advance. did search, read threads for hours.
asking for some advice..
1st time install: LW fails to initialize[no net firewall/loopback msg]

per Lord's list below:

If the #12 test works: should I still reinstall Java & LW?
do I still need to verify UPnP?

"If you are properly set up, then try uninstalling both Java & LW & reinstalling both using the "Offline" installers of each.

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
XP
2. What firewalls you have?
XP [exceptions UDP/TCP 6346]
3. How much ram?
512
4. Hard Disk space available?
3GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
DSL
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
D Link DI 524
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
no menu avail; per add/remove programs:
J2SE runtime environment 5.0 update 6
LW 4.10.9
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
Verizon
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.

D Link DI 524 wireless router: my compaq laptop[I have WinMX installed] &
HP desktop [not mine] etherenet cable to router
11. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
2nd time user with this PC. 1st time with DSL and wireless
12. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
>>The page sez 'Your test worked!'.

update: still trying

here's the latest,
verified UPnP[XP ICF, network connection, DI 524 router]
rebooted router and DSL modem
verified Java install per test on Sun website
uninstalled LW
LW reinstall: online installer would not connect
DLoaded full package install
still get msg: no internet connection firewall/pc loop
per LW website I tried configure ports on my IFC wireless but website sez to open LW and ck for listening port so since I can't open LW I just guessed and used 15258 for UDP/TCP but still no luck.
internet works fine tho and I've never had a pop up saying XP IFC was blocking anything.
Do I have my network connections set wrong?
should I reinstall Java even tho test sez OK? thanks in advance :-)

The Di-Link will either need to have UPnP enabled or manual port forwarding. I'm sure you saw it but just to verify, there is a di-link instructions link here under UPnP section Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link)

Also, double-check your XP firewall. I believe you may need to enter a port for LW also; Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

Your problems sound more to do with a software or modem/router NAT firewall. Also, try not running winmx at the same time.

Thanks for your help!
"The Di-Link will either need to have UPnP enabled or manual port forwarding. I'm sure you saw it but just to verify, there is a di-link instructions link here under UPnP section Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link)"
Used that link and did enable UPnP thru D-Link website per previous post.

"Also, double-check your XP firewall. I believe you may need to enter a port for LW also; Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)"

The above LW link sez to start from within LW and I can't get it to boot [maybe it's not totally installed?] so I guessed on port. Is there a RANGE of PORTS I could try? BTW no XP ICF msgs have ever popped up

"Your problems sound more to do with a software or modem/router NAT firewall.""
I agree. I tried rebooting all units. maybe I'll call verizon.

"Also, try not running winmx at the same time." thanks, haven't been

thanks again for your help :-)

On my Di-Link which is an earlier model (504G), the reboot function is found under: Tools>Misc. tab on left. See image below for my example. I don't know if yours is the same but should be similar.

Let's try the basics of setting up UPnP 1st. If that fails, then we can look at other ports to try.

out of the blue an icon popped up in task saying something to effect 'new device is available on network" icon for D-Link wirreless router now appears in My Network Places folder. I right clicked, saw 'invoke as an option, and after finding no meanigful references in MS help I 'invoked it. Then I went to D Link site again. after run/ipconfig to verify IP I pinged, test OK, verified UPnP was enabled, then rebooted D Link. LW still gets error msg[not net connection].

more UPnP tries

 the latest: in add/remove programs>components>Networking, I verified UPnP was checked and went ahead and checked peer to peer[don't know if it applies],
Also redid XP firewall: UPnP framework>Edit>all PCs[incl internet]. per XP help article below: [LW still won't boot/connect so I will try PC reboot:-)

To enable UPnP network functionality
Windows Firewall is turned on by default in Windows XP, which can help provide security for your computer. Consequently, the firewall blocks ports 1900 and 2869—the ports that the UPnP framework in Windows requires for network communication. Follow this procedure to open those ports.
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.
  1. Open http://www.gnutellaforums.com/ms-its...ortcutCold.gifWindows Firewall.
  2. On the General tab, click On (recommended). (If the Don’t allow exceptions check box is selected, the UPnP ports remain closed even if you complete the rest of the steps in this procedure.)
  3. Click the Exceptions tab.
  4. Select the UPnP framework check box, and then click OK.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/ms-its...chm::/note.gif Notes
  • To open Windows Firewall, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Windows Firewall.
  • By default, this procedure sets up ports 1900 and 2869 to accept connections from your home or small office network only. To receive connections from all Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, select the UPnP framework check box, and then click Edit.
  • When ports 1900 and 2869 are blocked, UPnP messages are not sent over the network. Therefore, a UPnP control point program, such as Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client, will not be able to discover or control UPnP devices attached to the network. Also, you will not see changes in the status of networked UPnP-certified devices (for example, when a device's power status changes from off to on), because Windows Firewall blocks incoming event messages.

You need to configure your XP firewall according to this Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

thanks 4 not giving up :-) below are the link config instructions
& <<my comments>>

WINDOWS XP INTERNET CONNECTION FIREWALL:
  1. Within LimeWire, go to: Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Firewall Config >>I can't get within Limewire, it has never booted. I did go to step 10 tho<<
  2. Make a note of the Listening Port located in the box next to "Listen on Port"
  3. Go to Start -> Control Panel
  4. Open Network Connections
  5. Right Click on the connection you use to connect to the network
  6. Choose Properties
  7. Go to the Advanced Tab
  8. If your Firewalled is Enabled go to step 10
  9. If you want to enable Windows XP Firewall check the box (this will enable the "settings" button. If you are not interested in enabling your Windows XP Firewall, hit cancel -- LimeWire will not be affected, and you may stop following these instructions.
  10. Under Windows Firewall Options, Go to the Advanced Tab.
  11. Select Internet connection used. (Local area network or the name of your connection)
  12. Click the Setting button
  13. Click the "Add..." button
  14. In the description field add "Gnutella"
  15. Set the IP address to "127.0.0.1"
  16. Check the TCP Radio button
  17. Set the external and internal ports to the same port that you made a note of in step 2
  18. Press OK
  19. Repeat steps 13 to 16, except this time check the UDP radio button in step 16
  20. Make sure the list of services has two items listed Gnutella, and make sure they are both checked.
  21. Click OK
  22. <<when I rebooted it still wouldn't connect. I checked the firewall settings and the Step 15 IP address was replaced by my laptop name [tk910us].
  23. >>I'm thinking about using the port #s I used for WinMx. any other ideas? Thanks again for your help :-)

I don't use XP so I'm not sure about the firewall. I do have alternate instructions which are slightly different which you can check with: 1. Settings for XP Firewall, & 2. Setting Up WinXP Pro FireWall

If you're using SP2 you might also be interested in this MS & 3rd party patches which increases simultaneous connections.

BTW the peer to peer option for upnp doesn't apply to this purpose. I think it's related to networking.

I'm not sure why you can't connect. Are you still seeing a brick wall in front of the blue globe icon at the bottom of LW? See image below to see what I'm talking about.

If you wanted to try other ports to connect with, the best to try would be any between 49152 - 65535. eg: 64049
You'd go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change the listening port.
