Don't run without a firewall, just configure the firewall to allow LW through. Read through this sticky, it tells you how to configure firewalls. Do the port test & see what result you get. If your router supports UPnP, make sure it's enabled within the router & ticked within LW's tools > options > advanced.
Connection problems? Check here first!

Read the stuff about NAT firewalls in modems/routers. Does yours have one?

What are your details

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

i'm running windows xp with service pack 2
LW version 4.10.9 java version 5.0 update 6
Firewall I'm using Windows firewall that came with my windows xp
my ISP is a local company yucca communications
Connection type is dial up 56.k
i'm connected at my house
no i'm not sharing a connection with other computers
this is not my first time using Limewire
also when it does happen to connect for a few minutes at a time after hours of waiting the firewall disappears from in front of the earth but if i close limewire and reopen it the firewall emblem reappers. i have done the connecting through the windows firewall before but it didnt do anything

Did you configure your firewall?
What was the result of the port test?
What's the brand & model of your router? Does it support UPnP & if so have you got it enabled?

The firewall might be within your modem/router. It's still better to run with the Win firewall than no firewall at all.

Your router is a piece of hardware. What boxes do you have that are connected to your computer? Have a look around & see what you can find. It might have 'router' written on it or 'modem' or 'modem/router'. It will have LEDs... some will blink & some will just stay lit.
