Default LW causing internet to disconnect

I'm just giving you guys an update on what's happening with my connection issues. LW causes my DSL to disconnect from the internet. And what happens, in order to remedy this, the modem/gateway resets itself, then I have to manually reconnect to the internet. In the past I was able to connect to the gnutella network all the time witrh no problems, but now, at times, I cannot connect. At times I can connect, no problem, and download things with no problems. Other times, I can connect with no problems, but a few minutes after I start downloading things, it will crash my internet connection and then my gateway resets and I have to reconnect to the internet. Deleting the preferences is good for a one time help. If my internet connection crashes, or I cannot connect to the gnutella network, deleting the folder will allow me to connect, but always, later in the downloading session, my connection will crash, like clockwork. So, I've stopped deleting the folder, as it's not a fix. LOTR suggested port forwarding, and that worked for a while, but I don't think that was the problem. Obviously it wasn't. I think as far as the ISP fix that's been posted a few times, I haven't tried it, because I don't believe a proxy server is the answer. I've been trying to research and find out what exactly would cause a DSL internet connection to crash (I used to have a cable modem, and it NEVER disconnected, also, I know people who have cable connections, and they never disconnect either), but that info is hard for me to find. One last variable to the equation: I run nVidia display, and when I updated to the latest drivers, it caused the LW interface to have blank spots. I recently discovered that when the LW display is "messed up" I have the most amount of download time. But the display is normal at times (rare), and when it is normal I cannot connect AT ALL, not even to the gnutella network, it just crashes my DSL constantly. I know I can roll back to older drivers, but that isn't the point. So, I'm open for suggestions. Maybe you guys know more about DSL connections than I do. Well, thanks in advance for any help.

You problem is most likely in you modem/router try updating your firmware etc. It sounds like LimeWire is overloading it. Especially since you did not have the problem when you were using cable.

Yeah, I tried that already. My gateway is a POS, no updates are available. I really need to switch to a different manufacturer.

Try some settings changes. (Tools>Options>) Turn Ultrapeer capabilities off under the Speed option in Options. Also in Options>Speed: turn OOB searching off. Make sure iTunes sharing is disabled. Possibly reduce both upload & downld bandwidth by 5-10%

Another thing to add to these ideas, reduce your incompletes. In LW, cancel all those that are zero % (1st arrange by progress by clicking the top of that column.) Then go to Library window, select incomplete folder, press explore so the folder opens for you. Arrange by size & delete all those that are 0-50 KB (but be very careful NOT to delete the downloads.dat & .bak files!!!)

See if that results in improvement. Also as I suggested in the other thread, try changing LW's compatibility mode to either windows 2000 or NT.

Also when you open LW, let it settle for some mins before searching, etc.

You can also check out changes to the newer LW betas here http://www.limewire.com/english/cont..._history.shtml

Man, you guys should be getting paid for this stuff. I've applied all your suggestions LOTR, now it's just a matter of time to see what happens. I noticed that if my connection drops (internet or gnutella) that closing out LW completely and opening it back up again helps too. Also, letting it settle into the network a little bit helps too. I have it set to where it doesn't connect automatically when I load it. Sometimes it works fine, most of the time it doesn't. Yesterday I was able to download a full divx movie and it only dropped the connection once. But the day before that, I was trying to download one (Pr*d***r), and it would not let me connect. It kept crashing my internet. Well, thanks again. I'll let you know what's comes of the new suggestions.

Sorry but please don't mention copyright files on the forums if you're downlding them. Forum Rules (click here)

Yeah, the more I research this, the less I think it's a LW problem. Thanks for all the tips though, but nothing is working. I am turning my focus to my internet provider.

I think I got it straightened out (I hope). It was the firewall that came built into the gateway. I disabled it, and so far I haven't been disconnected.
