dial-up connection, help!

i already posted, and took the firewall advice, but it didn't work at all. okay, basically my way to connect to the internet is through AOL. i open up my AOL, and then minimize it and then everything connects to the internet through that. i'm wondering if my limewire can't connect like that, so is there a way that i can tell it that i have a dial-up connection?? please help me - limewire is my life!

thanks so much

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
11. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
12. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

And last but not least, do you see a brickwall in front of the small globe in the left bottm corner of the LW window?
;)

1. Windows Xp
2. McAfee, and then just Windows
3. do you mean how much room?
4. no
5. dial-up
6. ?
7. home
8. LW - 4.10.9, Java - 1.5.0_07
9. AOL
10. no
11. this is a new problem and i've been w/ LW for about 4 months. The difference is that i traveled to a different state for the summer, and i'm using a different computer so i had to install limewire and java on this computer and for some reason its not working...obviously.
12. the test worked
13. yes i do see a brickwall, but i did try the procedure you advised where you add gnutella, etc. and the brick wall still didn't go away.

i really hope you can help me!

Where does the telephone jack plug in? Directly into the computer (at the backside) or into a small box outside the computer?

If the latter one, try to take a look at it and tell me every data you can find on it, such as model No., Brand name, etc.

i have a Compaq laptop so it plugs into the left side of the laptop.

Well, since you plug the jack into your laptop, I can assume that you have an onboard modem for dial-up with probably 56k.
So, at least we can exclude the modem from the list of possible firewall "producers".
There are two other things we could try.
First, go and delete the " .limewire " preference folder as discribed in Poit 2&3 in Fixes for Limewire:
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36420

But you have to have LW completely closed (i.e. also in the system tray next to the clock in your desktop window).
After having done so, you will open LW again and there will be some splash window asking you to configurate LW again. Go through the procedure and then give LW some time (i.e. 5-45 minutes) to settle down.

And if that doesn't solve the problem, try using LW with the XP firewall off.
;)

Make sure your XP firewall is disabled! (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) & double-check your mcAffee settings.
