Firewall Problems I am having trouble with my firewall. I have 2 firewalls, my Windows is disabled and my Norton Antivirus is enable. I can't figure out how to configure it for LW. My OS is XP. Any help would be much appreciated. |
|
No, I don't have those options that are listed on that site. Even when I disable Norton, LW says that I still have a firewall up. |
double click on the NPF icon on your desktop, or right click on the globe in your taskbar and choose NPF...then hilight 'Personal Firewall' and choose configure...then choose Program Control...in that screen untick the box that says 'turn on automatic program control' (this is for security reasons...when anything tries to access the net for the first time, NPF will stop it and ask you what to do about it...this allows you to determine just what it is that you want online...as an example, I NEVER allow any media players to do anything online...period...etc)...after unticking that box, have a looksy at the list of programs that are already internet enabled...delete any that refer to LW, and maybe any that you feel 'funny' about..OK...now close up the NPF gui, and start LW...you should get 2 queries about LW, and JAVA...of course allow those online, and choose always... |
1 Attachment(s) I think if found the problem. My Router has a firewall. I just don't know what to enter into these fields. Under source and destination of Interface I have the options of LAN and WAN. Under protocol I have the options of TCP, UDP, and ICMP. |
Try this link and follow the instructions carefully... http://www.portforward.com/english/r...4/Limewire.htm |
It didn't work at first, but when I went to filters after virtual server and enabled my static IP and ports then it took the wall down from in front of the globe. Thank you very much. I couldn't have been even close to doing this without you.:D My internet connection is at 100Mbps. How fast should I be able to upload and download files? |
Wow, now that I am downloading a movie, it's going over 100kb/s which is way better than when I was downloading one at an average of 12kb/s yesterday. Thanks a lot why.:D |
Excellent....:) |

Still, it's not always easy to understand. I followed the advice on how to get rid of the bloody brickwall. (listen to port etc) So now that I have put my settings right, seemingly, there are days when it's there, others when it isn't. Strange. Yesterday for instance the brickwall was there , the download speed was around 5 kb/s, 15 at the most; today no brickwall in front of the globe. Why? I don't know. So I wanted to check whether I was as lucky as Malice and made an experiment. I found a movie I could download and checked: 30 kb/s was the fastest the download speed went. It was 2 hours ago. I checked just now, the speed is :) Still, if anybody can explain why the brickwall sometimes appear, sometimes doesn't... that'd be fine to know:confused: |
[QUOTE=Marcassin] I checked just now, the speed is :) QUOTE] the speed is 150 kb/s |
I recall another couple of members who have experienced the same thing with the wall appearing and the disappearing...But I dont know why this happens...They just re-enter the manual Port Forward and Listen Port number again.....;) |
Huh? thats pretty much whats up with me 2... i have a 100 mb connection, no one knows how fast it should go? mine goes fastest 32 kbps, and my firewall icon is some times there and some times not as well. |
I no longer have the brickwall. The problem seems to lie with the antivirus firewall. Many PCs are sold together with an antivirus software ready for installation (Norton; McAfee , generally) Even if the new buyer doesn't install the ready-for-use antivirus in order to install another one , the Norton antivirus, for instance, is still there. To get rid of it you have to install it first and then disable it. I found this out lately when I installed an upgraded version of Trend Micro PC-cillin : although I had never installed the Norton version on my computer it stopped the installation of PC-Cillin. Trend Micro warned I had to install Norton first and re-install PC-Cillin. When it comes to the stage when Norton stops the installation, the trend Micro antivirus takes over and removes all the Norton elements that could be in the way. Then you disable the firewall of your antivirus. If you settings for LW are correct, if you have enabled your router and Windows security center to let through LW, the brickwall does not appear in front of the globe any more. |
Im almost possitive right now that its my internet company though. but thank you any way. |
will this help with the one bar connection?????? |
No brickwall anymore Windows Xp kept crashing last week on my PC;(the message on a blue page saying that Windows will have to shut down on account on an error probably linked to either a pilot or peripherals) So I decided to restore the whole system as found when buying it and now it works as clockwork. There's no brickwall when LimeWire opens, and all I did was close Windows firewall and give my router and Trend-micro antivirus the instruction to allow Limewire in. So I suppose when the machine is "clean" from all the small programs or software we have downloaded over 2 or 3 years and Limewire is installed right from the beginning things run smoothly. I know it's kind of a bother having to restore the whole thing through and through but it's often the best way of overcoming our problems. |
what port number should i use?? Does it really matter as long as it is 10000 - 60000?? |
It doesn't matter Yes you can use any port above 10000; use UPnP.It's recommanded. Actually there's plenty of advice on this forum on how to set your Windows firewall, or that of of your antivirus, or your router, but it appears that sometimes LimeWire is behind a firewall even after everything has been set properly. My hunch is that an old antivirus software is still there somehow even you think you got rid of it for another one. Also don't use several firwalls (Windows, antivirus, router) |
winterchild New here to this forum but not new to Limewire. Happy to be here where I see that people are actually replying regarding help needed! Having major connection problems all of a sudden and my biggest question is...what ARE those port numbers I must enter, where do I enter these AND just how to find them on my computer...Do I need to do this if there is NO wall/globe problem? I am an older...way older and not awfully computer-literate, so it's hard enough being an older, without navigation problems via computer literacy added in! When I began with Limewire, I connected in a quick fashion. I have lots of music, yes, but like to continue to update my files when I hear new stuff I want. ....lately, I cannot connect. I have that feared disease...'starting connection', which ultimately goes to 'disconnected'. OS is WindowsXP, Norton protection, and my firewall shows just the globe, no wall...as Limewire was 'excepted' some time ago! So...hopefully someone here can help me muddle through this. |
Hi, I have a older emachine computer with XP. I use Cox cable internet. I just purchased limewire PRO and I cannot get a full connection. Its stops at one bar and I cannot use any of the service. I have deactivitated the firewall (that I know about anyway). I have checked all the settings from some of the pages that I have read on this site. I still have the firewall in that appears on the bottom of the page. My daughter uses limewire with her computer with the same service. I began to try the whole procedure of setting up a different IP with 7 pages of instructions and got lost in the procedure of where the DNS was not clear and then you have to call your provider to get the correct name servers and so on. I just paid to use the service. Im not a computer programmer..... Is there a easy fix or what is the process to get my money refunded from limewire pro? If I cant get any assistant written in simple form then Im simply going to call my credit card company in the tomorrow and stop payment on the charge.. Sorry but im frustrated. This seems to be a ridiculous process just to listen to some music. Thanks in advance for any advice. |
I am having a serious problem with my lime wire. Every time i open the program it never connects and i can not use the program to do what i wish which is simply download music. does any one know how to fix this problem because i have redownloaded the program several time and i am far from a computer wiz? |
Try the fixes in the thread below. If nothing there helps, post back with your system details:) If LW Will Not Connect |
Having bought Limewire Pro recently Stanstinnett should have no problem connecting and downloading . Still if you deactivate the Windows firewall you must make sure your antivirus allows LWPro and if you use a router you must also open the ports on it. As far as your antivirus software is concerned you open it see what programs are allowed and if LW does not appear in the list you add it by following the various steps given by your antivirus software. As far as your router is concerned after checking the port number in Tools when opening LW you enter the number in your router (UDP/TCP). Normally the brickwall should disappear. |
Firewall problems Is it really necessary to do all that stuff? It seems terribly complicated with the likeliehood of fouling something up. I have the firewall problem as above and can't decide why but I am not a complete techie and don't trust anything! Is there an easier way? |

Frostwire Hi Lord of the Rings...I downloaded Frostwire and doesnt recognize a firewall so it works..butnot very well..i did a search for soul musinc and only downloaded 3 files.! so it is not downloading many files...but atleast under connections there is a list of 3 ISP> I opend LimeWire but doesnt connect and the firewall is still there...although it has been disabled from Windows and Norton The key is that Limewire rejected my ISP. Any other ideas? the Java was last updated in April 08 and I spent thaat year using Limewire with no problem so I dont this is JAVA the problem..I even did an updated today and Frostwire works with it. Any other ideas? how do I make Limewire recognize my ISP ? or to Limewire stop recognizing a firewall that doesnt exist as it is also on the list of exceptions. I use Windos xp, lan connection, mobile broadband device, nothing new has been added to my computer. Thank you..Dolores |
