Firewall Issues

Hello! I am using Comodo Personal Firewall, and I have Limewire on the Trusted Applications List. I have my Windows Firewall turned off, and I cannot seem to get Limewire to recognize that there is no firewall on. I can search for music wonderfully, but when I click to download, nothing happens. I have followed the instructions given from the website to make sure the Gnuetella network was open, and the TCP and UDP Ports were open. I have a Turbo Charged Connection, and I do not understand why this is happening. I have also put my firewall on 'Allow All' and even tried different firewalls. Does anyone have any suggestions please? :) Thank you very much!! :D

Do you have a wall in front of the globe in Limewire...

MsPinkFreud August 15th, 2006 07:50 PM

Yes there is a wall in front of the globe. It says that there is a Firewall Detected, but I don't see how there is. Thank you very much : )

There would be a NAT firewall built into your modem...
Take a look at this thread and follow the UPnP set up, if that doesn't work post back with the brand and name of your modem and we can help you Port Forward...:)

I got the model of my modem/router, and it isn't on any of those lists. It's a Netgear. I'm sorry to cause trouble. I just can't get this figured out. Thank you so much for your help! : )

MsPinkFreud

Unfortunately, most if not all modem/routers now have built in firewalls and it is this firewall that LW detects.

You will have to go through the "Port Forwarding" process to allow LW full access to the internet and P2P network, there is no other choice.

Therefore, go to this URL:

http://www.portforward.com/help/portforwarding.htm

Find your modem/router and follow the instructions to "Port Forward" LW.

I read about Port Forwarding, and I think I understand it, I just don't know how to do it. That page only explained what it is, it did not tell me how to go about doing it. Thank you very much! : )

ukbobboy01 August 16th, 2006 10:06 AM

You have to navigate your way to your modem/router model, still if you say you have a Netgear Router then try this URL:

http://www.portforward.com/english/r...outerindex.htm

You will find all the Netgear models on this page “Port Forwarding” has instructions for.

UK Bob

PS. Admittedly, it is not clear how to navigate from the main opening page to the information you want.

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 12:45 PM

It didn't work, but thank you very much : ) I appreciate everyones help.

wondering why August 16th, 2006 12:47 PM

where did it go wrong....

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 12:49 PM

It's been like this since I've had it

wondering why August 16th, 2006 12:52 PM

Ok I know you have a Netgear, look under it and tell me the model number..:)

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 12:53 PM

It is a CG814WG v2 : )

wondering why August 16th, 2006 01:00 PM

Ok this is the link for you, now you need to follow the instructions carefully, especially the static IP address part...This will take you awhile, be patient with it and it will get rid of the firewall....:)
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...G/Limewire.htm
Let me know when your finished...;)

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 01:02 PM

I'm sorry, but someone just gave me that link and I just did it, and it didn't work : ( I don't think it can be fixed. Thank you so much though! Maybe it's because I don't have a Static IP, and I can't get one. My ISP doesn't do them. Thank you very much though.

wondering why August 16th, 2006 01:05 PM

Your ISP wont give you one, the set up for the static IP is in the instructions...

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 01:21 PM

I'm sorry, but it still did not work. Thank you anyway : )

Dreamtech August 16th, 2006 08:32 PM

Guys, your confusing her.
MsPinkFreud, see your modem talks to the computer via using numbers, your computer has a specific number and so does your modem, if these numbers aren't similiar the modem can't talk to the computer, it's like telephone if you dial the wrong number, you normally get someone saying this is a wrong number, with the modem it tries to locate to communicate, if these numbers are similiar they can talk to each other. Both new DSL USB and Ethernet modems do this, dial up however are just simple type in ISP Dial Up number. add username and password, click and connect.

Now what they mean by Static IP is that your modem and computer both have a similiar static IP address. Dynamic IP addresses are normally given to you once you have connected to the internet via accessing router page, and of course it will say connected in green.

Now if you don't know the Static IP Address
1. Click on "Start"
2. Click on "Control Panel"
3. Click on "Network Connections"
4. In LAN, you should see an icon which might say connected, I want you to right click on it
5. Click on "Properties"
6. Scroll down the list to "TCP/IP" and highlight it
7. Click on "Properties"
8. It should be "Use the following IP Address"
with a set of numbers I want you to write down all the numbers.
9. Click "Ok"
10. Close Network Connections
11. Close Control Panel
12. Click on "Run"
13. Type in "Command"
14. Type beside C:> Ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (use default gateway number)
it should come up with 4 responses

It will either be:
Request Timed Out
Reply
Couldn't Find Host

(pleez pm me with the responses)

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 08:50 PM

Thank you very much, but I'm sorry, it did not work. I've tried that before.. but I did it again, and it didn't work. I even changed the port number. I'm at a loss for what to do now. I think it's just not going to work. Thank you everyone for helping. I'm bound not to use Limewire lol. Thanks again! : )

Dreamtech August 16th, 2006 08:58 PM

What about the software firewall, did you remove it?

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 09:01 PM

I've added Limewire to the access list, but I don't want to take it off my computer completely. I need some kind of protection.

Dreamtech August 16th, 2006 09:20 PM

lol, all Netgear routers have firewalls except for the older DSL ones from a couple of years ago. Really, you don't need Comodo unless your modem doesn't have a built in Firewall or are on Dial-Up internet connection. But first remove comodo access access internet explorer (view a few webpages) and email (send email to self).

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 09:34 PM

omg, it worked! Thank you so much! I'm just wondering though, is my Netgear Firewall going to keep me protected? I really don't want to get any viruses on my computer from anywhere, and I'm not saying I'll get it from Limewire, I just mean in general. My computer isn't very old, and well, to be honest, it's my baby lol. Anyway, thank you so much for helping me figure this out! : )

MsPinkFreud August 16th, 2006 09:38 PM

sigh.. I spoke too soon lol. The wall is gone, but when I hit 'Download' it doesn't do anything.

Dreamtech August 16th, 2006 09:57 PM

Put just an anti-virus application on, oh ok now Limewire, I want you to uninstall Limewire and all Java applications and reinstall.

Marcassin August 17th, 2006 12:47 AM

Yes, I have a similar problem as MsPinkFreud, except that a) I can download whether the brickwall appears or not ; b) I don't always have the brickwall in front of the globe. Yesterday it never appeared; today I have it and I haven't changed anything to my settings.
So I made an experiment: I simply disabled my firewalls, both the windowsxp's and my router's( wanadooLivebox). No firewalls, normally the brickwall should disappear. It hasn't. So I dont see how Limew can detect a firewall. That's why, more often than not, I simply choose to ignore it.

wondering why August 17th, 2006 01:14 AM

Have a look at this attatchment, what is your set up....

Because I use a router (wanadoolivebox)and no longer use a modem, the LAN is not connected.
With my router connection when I get to stage 8 it says "obtain an ip automatically" and there is nothing in the box "use the following IP address" not even the one which I can see in my livebox config.
Then I noticed that the address in LAN and in the router ends differently. LAN ends with 0.1 and in my router with 1.10
