Firewall problems???

Hi,
I'm trying to get my limewire working, but it just won't connect. I just got back to college from the summer and I'm updating everything, but LW won't work (brick wall).

My computer has:
Pentium 4 HT @ 3.2GHz
200GB hardrive
1GB ram
XP Pro with all updates
McAfee antivirus
Windows Defender beta 2
Windows firewall
LW 4.12.6 from limewire.com
java version 5, update 8

As for my connection, its the university LAN, 100mbps, with no routers or NAT stuff that I know of (although i could be wrong). I've tried everything I've found on opening ports in the firewall...including manually setting ports in the windows firewall....changing port numbers to random numbers....disabling the firewall and antivirus....port tests by visiting that one site...etc. Right now its set to listen on port 15505 and use UPnP (in grey the manual port forward is at 6346). Those are the default values it had after i installed the latest version.

Any Ideas anyone? This is killin me

By the way,....I checked in Control Panel > Network Connections , and instead of my network connection being listed as "Connected, Firewalled" it just says "Connected" (since I disabled the firewall). So does this mean my connection is fine and its just LW that's messed up?

Yes, your college has probably installed, over the summer holidays, some anti-P2P hardware that curbs or eliminates P2P internet traffic.

I'm guessing you are in the US and, from what I unedrstand, this curbing of P2P traffic is becoming very popular with US college IT administrators.

PS. The only way to find out if this is true is to talk to an IT administrator.

Great, just what i didn't want to hear. So assuming they are pulling something on me, is there going to be any way around it? Or am I going to have to find something other than limewire?

It's not just LW thats affected but most, if not all, P2P apps.

There may be away around it but you will have to consult your fellow students who are technically computer savy because you are likely to need local (college) knowledge.

Good luck.
