What's your connection like (how many green bars)?
Rather than run without a firewall, it's way better to use just 1 software firewall & have it configured properly. Follow this link for some instructions for different firewalls
Firewall setup

Have you read through this thread... it has heaps of info about firewall problems. Your modem or router probably has it's own internal firewall, read through the sections about UPnP & port forwarding
Connection problems? Check here first!

If you're still stuck, post back with your details

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

You should contact the computer admin & find out what the college's policy on p2p use is. Lots of schools do block p2p use.
Do this test, see if it works. If the test doesn't work then LW's default port is blocked.

Do other people there use p2p? You could try changing port numbers but if the school's anti-p2p, there's a good chance they'll monitor all ports.
So talk to admin & if other people are using p2p, find out how they've managed to get things working

Well, you could try changing ports but there's no guarantee that this will fix things.

Go to LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to one in the range of 49152 - 65535. Apply. Now change your Norton firewall config so that the new port number's allowed thru the firewall.

If that doesn't help then you'll need to find out about the school's p2p policy.

I bought the program made the exceptions in the fire wall and in norton anti
virus protection und the worm protection like the FAQ says and the program still wont initiate and start. This is quite annoying, please help. The only screen that shows up is the yellow one that has the little bar at the bottom with the limewire symbol in the middle or in other words the startup screen

I get this error message.

Limewire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall
program blocking Limewire's access to the internet or loopback connection on the local machine. Please allow limewire acesss to the internet and restart
limewire.
