I am assuming you are running Windows because they recently had an update that messed up some audio drivers. First you will need to find out what audio software you are using. Unfortunately I am currently running Vista so the pictures below will not be exactly the same but close enough.
First open the control panel by clicking on start/control panel once the control panel is open look for the system icon (first picture below) if it doesn't look pretty much the same switch the control panel to classic view. Click on the system icon and select device manager. Look for sound, video controllers and expand it by clicking on the box next to it with the + sign in it (second Picture). See what your audio device is mine is Realtek AC 97.
Once you know what it is do a web search for the latest drivers for it and download them. Some will have an automatic installer with them others you may have to manually install. If you have to manually install them put the file in a folder in you documents or where ever you normally save downloads ( they may need to be unzipped if so unzip them in the folder).
Now go back to the device manager and double click on your audio controller a window should pop-up click on the driver tab at the top of the window (Third Picture) then click on update driver now choose browse and go to the folder where you saved the driver and windows should install it and it should fix your problem.
Good Luck
