Strong Connection, Can't Download OK, I'm not sure whats wrong or what to do. I can search just fine, but my downloads almost never start, and when they do i get about 1-3 kb/s if i'm lucky, it usually doesn't get past connecting. My connections to the network never last ver long, no more then 10 minutes, but i never stay disconnected for long, so limewire usually tells me I have a very strong connection. Please help, here's my info 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) XP Home 2. What firewalls you have? None that I know of, just the windows firewall. 3. How much ram? 1Gig 4. Hard Disk space available? 19.5 Gigs 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Cable 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Ambit Cable Modem 60678eu, no router 7. Where are you trying to connect from Military Barracks 8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? LW 4.12.6, Java 1.5.0_02 9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? Charter Cable 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? My Test Worked! 11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. Not that I know of 12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. 1st Try with LW 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? No Not sure if it matters, but I also have a wireless card in my computer, i'm not using. |
Try changing to a higher port (say 64049). In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config is where you can change listening port. Apply to save a change. There are fake files around that will sit connecting for ages & then need more sources but won't ever download. For more info about these things check below Fake files showing up in search results You might want to update Java. Take the offline installer for JRE below & remove your current Java before you install the new one! http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp To check that other people can download from you, in LW go tools > options > bug reports > view example. Scroll down to 'recieved incoming this session'...true or false? If it's true then you can recieve incoming connections & there should be no prob with uploads. Charter might have something to do with it, as they've been known to shape bandwidth for p2p users. ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire Just check with whoever's in charge of internet at the barracks, to make sure it's not something within their setup that's causing you to disconnect. Also (not sure if it really makes a diff or not:o)...are you connected to that modem via USB or ethernet cable? |
I changed my port to what you said, found some real files, updated my java, found out other people can download from me, and restarted my computer, but still my downloads never get over 3/4 kbps, and most of the time sit at 0 or won't even begin. Anymore suggestions? Also, I connect to my modem through USB, and I have no idea who, or if anyone here on base has anything to do with the cable, I don't think anyone does. So charter is known to shape bandwidth to p2p, is there anyway i can work around that? Would torrents also be effected by this, I tried that recently as well without much luck. |
Download a file from here & see what speed you get http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml If Charter is the problem, there's not too much you can do. Have a look through the thread below, might be something there although it's probably more for people whose ISPs are blocking rather than shaping. A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire Some ISPs shape at certain times, their 'peak' hours...try downloading at different times of day & see if there's any difference. Do other people there use LW? If so, find out what they've done to get it working. |
i tried downloading from that site and it never started, needed more sources. |
