Default 'connecting'...

Hi everyone! I am very new here ... and very confused, as well! My fiancee and I got a brand new computer as a Christmas present yesterday, as our old computer was fried by lightning a few months back!

Anywho, I downloaded Limewire and it is not working. I have read just about everything I can read here and absolutely nothing has helped.

We use Norton Internet Security and I have already changed the Personal Firewall and all that stuff. I actually don't know much about computers.

So, in general, our problem is that it says it is Connecting, and I can search but nothing comes up. And, at the bottom left where those five bars are, only one is green. And there is a green circle next to it that says '3'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am getting frustrated! Haha!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas! =)

<3 Haley

Make sure the XP firewall (guess you're using XP) is off...it will conflict with the Norton one.

Have a look through the sticky below, there's lots of info about connection/firewall problems

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
- XP
2. What firewalls you have?
- My XP firewall is turned off and I know I have Norton.
3. How much ram?
- Where would I find this?
4. Hard Disk space available?
- 62.2 gb
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
- High Speed DSL
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
- Actiontec GT704WG
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)?
- Home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
- Limewire 4.12.6
- Java 1.5.0_06
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)?
- Verizon
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
- It does not work.
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
- Not that I know of.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
- A new problem with a somewhat experienced user.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?
- I do, and I know that means there is a firewall somewhere, but I don't know where. I disabled my Norton and my XP was never on, I have checked several times!

Sorry I can't help you guys to help me very much! I am trying! =)

If that test doesn't work, it means that LW's default port is blocked. Some people seem to have problems with Verizon & some find that LW works fine.

Try changing ports. In LW go tools > options > advanced > firewall config. You'll see LW's listening port in the top right corner. Change that to 64049 > apply > ok & see if it's any better (you'll also need to change any specific ports allowed thru a software firewall). You could also try any port between 49152 - 65535. Or port 80.

Your router has an internal firewall. AFAIK your router supports UPnP...make sure it's enabled within the router & then choose the UPnP option within LW on that same firewall config page. Apply > ok to save any changes.

If using UPnP doesn't work, you can try port forwarding. Follow the instructions below for your router. It might look a bit complicated but it's not really, just go through all the steps slowly & if you get stuck, start over.

Thank you for explaining the whole firewall thing to me! I could not figure out where the firewall was when I had turned all of them off, so I thought!

Something that you told me to do worked! I have finally been downloading a few songs! Yay!! Thank you so much! I am bookmarking this website for future reference! And don't ask what it was that I did that worked because I did everything and it still wasn't working ... then about ten minutes later I came back to the computer and it worked! Haha! Who knows!!!

You are awesome! Thanks again!

<3 Merry Christmas!
Haley
