Beating a dead ******-Can't connect Okay here goes...I just bought this computer 2days ago..I've never had a computer b4 so this is all foreign stuff to me.I see people talking about this and that but I have no idea what they're saying so if you already posted an answer I'm sorry for repeating but I need this in lamen terms. Anyway, I was able to down load Limewire but when I go to access it shows me the tips and when I go to search a song It pops up saying that "Limewire is currently connecting to the network. Your search may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network." Then no downloads appear. Any suggestions...I've been online and I know it's not b/c of that. Now here's my info. I don't even know how to begin to find this so I'm just copying off the box.Forgive me:) 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX ) XP users Please state XP firewall on or off.? VISTA HOME BASIC 2. P.S- If I need to download a diff. Java then what is the diff. btw. offline and online? thanks again |
One more thing too..on AOL when I go to check the security settings it tells me that "A new version of AOL safety and security center for Windows Vista operating system will be available soon" |
Hi ShY Now! Go to, START/Set Program Access/Change or Remove Programs, now completely remove all versions of java. Now! Use this Link to get JRE 6 Use the off line installer NOT the (recormended) one, http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Disconnect from internet, close ALL apps n reinstall java. Follow thease instructions exactly. Vista needs java JRE 6 Shout if you need help. Peace. |
I went to start and when I tried to lookup the java and delete it but it wasn't there. When I went to download the new Java I chose to save it and when I did it told me that this file already exists& I over rode it.Now do I shut off the internet now or after it finishes downloading? It's at 15% now. I hate this:) |
Let it complete then closee things. Peace |
Thanks..I'm not an idiot but I hate computers..they're so confusing....thanks for the help:) |
Vista If uninstalling java doesn't work go to start-control panel-under programs you'lll choose uninstall a program- find mcafee and choose uninstall. it will pop a box with different options to uninstall, go ahead and choose all of them. after that's finished limewire should work fine. you'll probably need to get a different kind of virus protection because evidently mcafee and limewire don't mix too well. Good Luck!! |
Shy Hi. VISTA will only work fully with the NEW, java JRE 6 so use the link I gave ABOVE. if there's any other probs we will deal with that after. Never use Two Firewalls at the same time, You will get less Protection NOT MORE they interfear with each other. THIS POST HAS BEEN CORECTED Peace. |
okay..thanks mick..but we did run into another problem...I downloaded the new java and now I can actually search for stuff but when I go to download it it will say connecting for a few min. and then a box pops up saying"Your machine does not appear to have an active internet connection or a firewall is blocking LW from accesssing the internet. LW will keep trying unless you select disconnect" My internet will be working fine until that point and then I can't get onto any AOL websites. Now a question about LW...I have dial-up can I select downloads that say t1 or higher or cable or do I have to stick with modem? |
Hi Shy. Im sorry to inform you but AOL are shaping P2P traffic so its them I would suspect. As for T1,T3 n that you can D/L from all speeds. If you only have 56K dial up, then I would'nt try running to many other programs at same time There are better ISPs out there if you want to use P2P,Play Games,U.Tube. What country you in, people may recomend some for you. Peace. |
Thanks but 1more question for ya. I've got netscape too. Would I be able to use LW if I was online there instead of AOL? |
Im Just checking out netscape. Back in a mo. Right, I cant find any bad reports, So if its straight farward for you Give it a try. Can you let us know how you got on.:Smilywais: :D Peace. |
But that isn't fair (or right), some rumors say that Vista USES P2P tech NATIVELY in their LAN's, i don't think it should be the local machine then. PS: And a question for ShyGrl, Does Vista run well on those 512 Mb of RAM, or it runs slowly, please tell me, i'm thinking of upgrading |
Vista and McAfee don't go well together at all and HeatherDianeR is actually correct in what she has advised.... Quote:
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=66843 But you also need to get an Anti Virus, there are plenty of excellent free one's....http://www.grisoft.com/doc/products-...g/us/tpl/tpl01 I use this one myself.... Also it's a good idea to have good spyware protection... http://www.ewido.net/en/ These are some more links...Take a look, there all good... http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...25&postcount=5 |
Just a bit of extra info... This AV is also free (I use it) http://www.free-av.com/ And a good little IP blocker for using with p2p apps is PeerGuardian2, it's also free;) http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ |
Honestly DRK-GUY I don't really know. When it comes to computers I'm an idiot but I can say that offline when I want to do something it's not slow but as far as anything I do online at AOL.It's as slow as can be....I can't even run 3 things at once. I've had several people say it's just AOL& it's no good. Some people have said it's b/c I'm on dial up& some have said it has to be something with the computer. Sorry I couldn't help you more.:( |
okay I've uninstalled my Mcafee and guess what..nothing happened..I got the same exact message that I did before so I think Mick is right about it being AOL. I've got Netscape and I was trying to see if I got online there and tried to use LW and when I got on it kept saying i had problems so I posted on their forum and they said that NS responds neg. with the Mcafee too. I haven't tried to get on there since I just uninstalled my program but I'm gonna try now and I'll let you guys know how it goes. |
YEAH IT WORKED IT WORKED I HAVE LIMEWIRE!!!!!I'M SO HAPPY:) THE 3 DAYAND NIGHT HEADACHE IS FINALLY OVER:)Alright I'm gonna put every little detail that I did down and you guys can make of it what you will. Alright I started by downloading the JRE6 that Mick told me about(thanks so much) When that didn't work we determined it must be Aol....so I was going to try my netscape service...when my NS wouldn't come up I posted on their forums and found out that they have a problem with Mcafee too. Since I've seen it recommended several times I figured I'd try to delete my whole Mcafee. I did and when I went online(AOL) and I tried to search the message popped up"there's no connection so your search may not be complete...etc"I just closed it after that and opened my NS browser I had to connect to AOL to get my browser to work when I did that and it was up and running I tried my LW and when I put in my search it displayed the same message this time I just clicked ok and let it ride. No more then a few sec. after that my search popped up and I could download it and now it's fully downloaded. The only down side is that I haven't yet installed an anti-virus program yet and so I don't know how that'll affect my LW. I'll post if I have problems.Hope this can help someone and save them a big headache. I'd like to say thanks to Mick for all your help I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to you Heather for giving me the idea. And thanks to anyone else that helped.I'll keep posted im case something happens.:) Bye |
Jessie Im so happy you have things working now. So before you do to much downloading take good advice, & check out the stickies in RED at the top of each main forum page. May all your UPs n downs be good one's, n stay away from exe, rar, zip n wma files, there 99.999 % viruses. Stick to avi,MP3 ,till you get the hang of it. Peace. |
I do have a question for you though. On another forum a person named Don't Wanna Name suggested Avast as a good anti virus and says it doesn't interfere with LW and b4 I go installing it have you heard anything about it.Also, where will you see exe, rar, zip n wma at. Would it be under file name or what????? I must be getting annoying but thanks for the help:) :) :) |
Never mind I see it now I just had to go through it a couple times...It was a blonde moment hee hee. |
Hi Jessie. Avast doesn't interfere with LW as far as I know, is it free ? Here are some of the security programs we recomend http://www.grisoft.com(good free AVG) http://www.ewido.com(>>now called AVG Anti Spyware<< free 30 day trial -the best in my opinion) http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/(free) http://www.ccleaner.com/download/(free) Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE) OK Babe |
I hope this works for you guys. I bought a new computer with Windows Vista Home Edition and it came with Mcafee. I uninstalled the Mcafee and restarted my computer. I installed the AVG free edition antivirus. The resident shield wasn't working so I reinstalled choosing the repair option. I then started Limewire and IT WORKS GREAT. I really don't care if I ever reinstall Mcafee as long as I have an antivirus program. My daughter bought the same computer and it worked on hers also. I had already updated to JRE6 before I tried this so I don't know if that was necessary but I do know even with updating the java Limewire did not work before I uninstalled Mcafee. So obviously it isn't Windows Vista that causes the problem with Limewire.. |
So in short we have Two Problems. VISTA will only work fully with the NEW, java JRE 6 Also Evidently mcafee and limewire don't mix too well. If anyone has Mcafee F/W and LimeWire running properly together Can you post it here. Peace |
