Hi colditz.
System details - help us to help you Please.

Cut n paste these Questions, put your answers in bold text Thank You.

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. what OS version? (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista)
2. What firewalls you have ?
3. How much ram ?
4. Hard Disk space available ?
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers ?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.) ?
8. What version,LimeWire & Java,Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.?
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ?
10. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ?
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.?
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ?
14. Have you given full permisions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ?
15. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?

These are all contained within the sticky Connection problems? Check here first!
but possibly some people are getting a bit confused or lost when we direct them to this sticky & ask them to provide their details.

This information can be vital
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth,
some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions,
or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you:wink:
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

AFAIK BT throttles bandwidth if you use p2p...that could explain your slow speeds. This FUP is for business broadband (can't find the equivalent for home), I'd say it's the same deal for home accounts. Have you tried downloading outside of peak hours (6pm - midnight) to see if speeds pick up?
http://www.btbroadbandoffice.com/products/fairusepolicy

You could enable UPnP on the Home Hub & then use the UPnP option within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Apply > ok to save a change. See if that at least gets rid of the firewall icon.

You could also try port forwarding. That should get rid of the firewall icon & may help with your speed (no guarantees though, if it's a BT issue). Use the instructions here
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...b/Limewire.htm

Don't forget, the port forwarded & LW's listening port have to be the same number.

Hiya, thanks for your help.. I did everything you said and the firewall is still in front of the globe.. Could it be something else on my vista firewall i have to allow. There are lots of options there but i dont understand them all. I allowed the limewire one tho... Is really getting on my nervers now gr lol

Ive always had bt and never had no problems with how much i can download or speeds being slow in the past..

smoothboy2007 March 8th, 2007 07:25 AM

Hello there, Ia m new to this forum, I have a similar problem it keeps coming up with the machine does not have an active internet connection or a firewall is blocking.

I have a brick wall and all the bars are red and the number is 0.

I have tried evrything, I have tried to manually port forward, I have reinstalled Java, Limewirer etc.

My operating system is XP 64 bit
I have a gig of ram
I have 80 gig hard drive
I am running Bittorent also but limewire was not working before I installed
I have a BT home hub
I have this PC as part of a wireless network thought this PC is hard wired & a laptop connected wirelessly but does not use Lime wire.

I have tried everything switche dof firewalls in PC in router etc. I ahve set up a static IP also & port forwarded.

Can anyone help an increadibly frustrated member.

Sorry man, I have already did the port forwarding and I ahve it set on the correct port. According the Java site the version of Java is the only version available and should with with both 32 and 64 bit applications.

Anything else I can check? I guess I dont understand why it says I have a firewall up when I do not. It is telling me that it is trying to connect so it is a connection issue.

mickjapa108 March 12th, 2007 04:10 AM

Diveanx
I would give Brighthouse a ring and ask if there shaping P2P traffic, ASK have they any additional firewall on there connection ?
Some ISPs were OK but have recently started shaping, Please post what they
say, It will help others.
You said, you set port!!,Best to use No's 50000 to 65000 Both L/W ports should read the same number "Listen on Port "& "Manual Port Forward" must be the same & enabled, not upnp.

Have you updated java to JRE 6 ? you didnt say, & it will be better for 64bit
Peace.

Diveanx March 12th, 2007 05:09 AM

I could not find a JRE 6 on the Java site anywhere but I did read in the Java forums that 1.5 should work fine with 64bit so no I did not change it.

As I stated in another post I made, this is a new computer and Limewire worked fine until I started using the new computer. It also works fine on my laptop with no problems.

I will try the ports that you recommend and see if that helps any. I just had it set at the default port that it came with.

If you can give me a link to download that JRE 6 I would appreicate it.

mickjapa108 March 12th, 2007 05:53 AM

Heres the link, Use the offline installer.

It seems I am having the same problems as other users. I had Limewire on my old computer, but on this new computer, it will NOT let me download anything.

I am using the same router, ISP, and broadband modem. In addition, here is the requested information you asked for.

1. what OS version? (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista) Windows XP SP2
2. What firewalls you have ? Windows
3. How much ram ? 2 GB
4. Hard Disk space available ? 120 GB
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ? Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers ? Motorola SB 5120 modem, D-Link DI604 Ethernet Broadband router
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, apartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.) ? [B******[/B]
8. What version,LimeWire & Java? 4.12.11 for Limewire and 1.5.0.11_11 for Java
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ? Time Warner
10. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ? It said YOUR TEST WORKED in bold letters.
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.? This is my first time having problems
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ? Yes
14. Have you given full permisions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall? My firewall never asked me to give permission to Limewire. Not on this computer, and not on my old computer. I dont think Windows Firewall asks for permission. That might be the problem since I have the brick wall in front of the blue globe.
15. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.? XP Firewall is ON.

Please help me. Thanks!

birdy March 13th, 2007 02:17 PM

erieview417,
What happens when you try to download files? Are you properly connected (ie are all your connection bars green)?

Make sure LW's allowed thru the XP firewall, check the link below for instructions.
Firewall setup

Your router has a firewall. Enable UPnP within the router & then use the UPnP option within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config.
See if the brick wall goes away. If not, try port forwarding.

Here are the instructions for your router. Don't forget to set up a static IP address first!
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...4/Limewire.htm

Remember that LW's listening port, port in LW's 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the router all have to be the same number;)

AmandaBlist323 March 13th, 2007 02:55 PM

Connection problems

I just downloaded limewire and all of my bars are green except for one red one. I have done searches, however they are always incomplete, and say that Limewire cannot find a liscence for this file. I have seen that Norton Anti Virus is a problem, but I dont understand the directions on how to disable it. PLEASE Help, it would be greatly appreciated:idea:

AmandaBlist323 March 13th, 2007 03:00 PM

Ps Please put the information in simple terms because I dont understand any computer jargon.

wondering why March 13th, 2007 03:48 PM

Give limewire time to settle in, one bar being red should only mean that your still connecting to your ultrapeers....
With your lisence problem....
Go to Tools > Options > Searching > lisence warning and make sure the box is not ticked and then select apply....:rolleyes_2:

Well the upgrade to the new Java seemed to fix the connection problem and I can at least download stuff but I still have a brick wall over the globe and it appears that people can not download from me.

I have plenty to share and I dont have any downloads while online.

Thanks for the help so far though :PEACE:

birdy March 13th, 2007 05:48 PM

Sorry...there are that many people in this poor thread now & your details were on page 1:p

Double check your Windows firewall setup
Firewall setup

You've set up port forwarding. Double check the set up. Did you set up a static IP first? You have to make sure that LW's listening port, port in LW's 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the router are all the same number.

what happens? it tells me for every single download "Not enough sources" or "Need more sources." I try to refresh it and it still tells me for a short while "Connecting" and then it doesn't.

The use Upnp option was set as you had instructed, but I don't know what to do from there. However, the Windows Firewall did not have LW as an exception. I did correct that, but it did not fix my problem.

I can find tons of media files I want to DL but when I go to DL them, somehow, it is not allowing me to connect.

I guess the reason I am so confused about this is because my other computer(s) never had any problem with this stuff. I had the same platforms, same router, same connection type, same modem, all from the same location.

Please try again to help me because I cant figure out how to do this "fowarding" junk in the advanced Firewall settings of LW.

Thanks

erieview417 March 21st, 2007 06:52 PM

by the way, in addition to my above post, i do have five solid green bars. its just that to the right of the five green bars, i have the globe with the brick wall on it. just thought i'd add that detail in there in case it made a difference.

birdy March 21st, 2007 07:12 PM

Normally, when you see a file connecting for ages & then it needs more sources, it's a fake file issue. There are fake files throughout the network which will never download & here's some info about them.
Fake files showing up in search results

Do a test...search for an old song (new releases tend to show up as fakes more often) using the All Types search. Look for artist or album rather than song title. Choose a file with 10 hosts or less, or a file with a modem source. Can you download anything?

Some people seem to see this connecting/need more sources crap with every file & I don't know why:(
Are the LW versions the same on all computers (ie can some comps download but one not, using the same version of LW)?
Try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See points 2 & 3 below. If you've used LW versions older than 4.9.34 on the comp, you could have a folder in both locations. If not, just check point 3's location.
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back thru & reset things afterwards.

spiderman99 March 22nd, 2007 04:37 AM

hey! finally, i found a solution for this. I download the newer version of limewire which is 4.13.2. It works , yeah..............

Try this and let me know if it works for you guys,

Firewall :(

Hi,

I need help please! I downloaded limewire and it says I have a firewall blocking the connection. I am using Windows XP, i've added the program to my exceptions on security centre and still see a firewall. I have norton antivirus, called them to see if they could help.......but they didnt know jack.

How the heck do i get this firewall off!
:shoot:

birdy March 23rd, 2007 05:57 PM

Do you also have a Norton firewall? If you do, make sure that the XP firewall is off. If you don't have NPF, double check the XP firewall config.
Read this, there's a lot of info about connection/firewall probs (including internal firewalls within modems/routers;))
Connection problems? Check here first!

I'm going to read through this now, but I dont know if I have a NPF? LOL i'm not good at this computer stuff ;)
Thanks for your help!

anj March 23rd, 2007 06:51 PM

Ok, so i've already tried some of those things (personal firewalls through norton and putting it as an exception etc). I'm not sure how ports and routing work?
Here are the answers to those questions:

1. OS version? Windows 2000 XP
2. What firewalls you have? I've turned off the windows firewall and norton antivirus (permit all for LW)
3. How much ram? I dont know.
4. Hard Disk space available? DOnt kow
5. Connection type? Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Dont know?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (appartment complex,
8. What version of LimeWire - 4.12.11 & Java 1.5.0_10
9. Who is your ISP provider - Atop Communications
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It works.
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No?
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. LW old version worked fine, one day it stopped working and i tried to download another version...didnt work.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? yes.

Update your Java, use the JRE offline installer & remove your old Java version before you install the new one.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Does your computer connect to a modem or router, or does it just connect straight into the wall for internet? Have a look at any devices that your computer connects to & see if you can find a brand & model.

I can't find anything about that ISP:eek: Does the whole complex use them?

There could be a firewall associated with the complex's internet...is there a manager that you could ask?

You could try changing ports, to be honest I don't really know what else to tell you to do at this stage:o. Within LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 64049 > Apply > ok.

The modem is called coreaccess3221 and it connects through a straight into the wall. Yes, my whole complex uses them, no one else in the world (I cant even find them on the internet). I will have to call them to see what they can do.

I did the uninstall and re-install Java and it didnt work. As well as the changing ports. I dont know what the heck happened, I used to use LW all the time, and then all of a sudden it had a firewall. I think I hit "updates" on my shield icon and it screwed all this up. Usually usually the computer asks you if you want the program to be blocked as it is listed, and all i had to do for other programs is hit no and it was fine. But it doesnt ask me for LW and i cant think of anything else to do.

Thanks for your help though :)

Try reconfiguring the Norton firewall (ie remove the LW rules & start again).

Hi All

Can anyone let me know what is happening - I had limewire working for the last six months no problem - I then purchase limewire pro - and since I did this I am now getting a firewall blocking it. I have made sure there is no firewall in the control panel.

Then for 10 mins today the firewall dissapeared and is now back - totally confused - by the way not a pc expert. Any help would be great

I have to go now (it's 6.00am in OZ and I have a few things to do) but I will get back to you in a few hours ;) )

In the mean time you can update your Java as the one you are running is out of date...
Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall it and then download the offline JRE version from this link (it's the 5th one down)...

Do you have a seperate modem and router or is it all in one...
If they are seperate I need the make and model number for your router...

I also found this about another member with the same modem as you, but there ISP is Clearwire, is your ISP associated with them at all....
