Because my computer was untouched until i moved it to the new apartment, and then limewire didnt work. I've researched and done my homework, and found that most users have tried every trick from every post...and sure a couple kids have a screwed up computer and can change a autostart setting, or change their port numer, or firewall setting, but I'm finding tons and tons of people who have gone through every loop possible, and they have the exact same situation, their school is running out of bandwidth, and therefore the school makes this big annoucement about how they're going to block ports and so forth. Its fact. |

helbigtw, Think about what you are saying. Limewre worked at your old apartment but on the same computer doesn't work at your new apartment so it is a problem with Limewire. I doubt that Limewire defines your location or which apartment you live in and decides to work or not. I know you say you have tried everything but have you posted your system details and your specific problem asking for help? You are at a College now. If so did you move into an area that blocks Gnutella? I suspect this could be an issue. Have you read the posts about the issue with Windows SP2? It can destroy your ability to connect. There are several posts that tell you how to correct the problem with SP2 but I assume you have tried that. Norm |

Limewire Not Working Yet I have windows XP home with SP2 and like many of you, i am not able to get limewire to work. I have allowed through windows firewall, changed the port number and added that port to the firewall, tried using a different firewall, tried turning off all firewalls, tried unchecking connect at startup and tool tips, uninstalling and reinstalling limewire, uninstalling and reinstalling the beta version, deleting the preference folder, disabling ultrapeer, downloading a hotfix from microsoft, and even tried putting a spell on it with the help of this very unusual person that lives down the hall. Alas, nothing seems to work. I just read a post to try and start up limewire as soon as you turn on your computer before surfing the web or anything, so I am about to try that(cross my fingers), but I don't expect that to work either. If there is anyone out there who knows another tip that i have missed reading, or something new to try, please let me know, If anything happens to work for me I'll let you know, and hopefully it will help others. Good luck to all in the search for connection. |

For those with 'sp2'/'service pack 2' probs search the forum for just that. Some people have come up with solutions that work for themselves & possibly some others but not all (so keep that in mind.) If you're considering updating to sp2 I would highly advise you to search the forum for issues that have arisen due to sp2 alone! Some people have updated successfully without issue, which shows it can be a very particular for some others alone. But they're not really alone b/c it's affected gigantous amounts of businesses (& individuals) out there as well! Like most M$ upgrades it's best to wait a while until the worst of the bugs have been squatted! |

SP2 is not the cause. I had SP1 when I moved here and it worked in my old apartment. I moved to this apartment and it didnt work. I then installed SP2, and it still didnt work. My old apartment had the same ethernet running to it, the JMU network, and NTC (company) handled it just like here. The only difference is, this is on a different hub, but the main hub is still the school somehow. And yes I've tried posting my operating system/computer model etc.. and tried all solutions and messed with all settings. I have run Limewire since the day it came out. Yes I've had problems with it in the past, and was always able to change some setting and mess around with it and get it to work. But from my extensive work, my conclusions are all pointing to actual IT person who told me that "We are blocking most of the ports so that people cant run Limewire and our bandwidth will be more freed up." And that is why my Limewire wont work. Its just this: how to circumnavigate 3rd party. |

I would partially disagree with you b/c it has caused many people probs. The reason being that sp2 changes the default settings. People are not warned about this! Then it seems like a jungle sometimes to find their way out of the mess! The probs can affect each user in different ways so there's not necessarily one simple answer to the issue. Sometimes there's cases where each case has to looked at on an individual basis. Pity the M$ prog's were not more competent! I was competent at what I did as a Prog'r why can't a 'major' co. be competent at what they do particularly when they have more resources at hand! Is it laziness or slack of attitude or else???????????? How can they 'not' double-check their worx when tested under different conditions & circumst's. Or is it just a part of their 'game'! |

SP2 no more, and still doesn't work. I previously posted as a guest called Not ready to give up yet. I was so frustated with SP2 and all of the problems it has been causing(not just with limewire), that I decided to uninstall it and wait for M$ to try and fix it up some(if thats possible for them). I was hoping that this would allow Limwire to connect, however, still no luck. I don't know if SP2 has still changed some setting that didn't change during the uninstall, or if SP2 had nothing to do with my problems in the first place. I've searched through everything I could on this forum, and still couldn't find a solution. Maybe I'm just no longer supposed to download files to my computer. If you find a magic cure, I'd love to here it, but for now Good Luck! |

That sounds like Microsoft They never want you to go back to before you had problems. They want you to pay lots and lots of money for stuff that doesn't work. I know you didn't have to pay for SP2, but they charge enough for everything else, you think they could at least test their products better before giving them to us to find their mess ups. Thanks Lord of the Rings, I've read a lot of your stuff, and tried many of your solutions, unfortunatley they didn't work, but you sure sound like you know what you're doing.
