![]() I'm hoping some kind soul will help me with my problem with using Limewire to connect to the internet. It's a bit of an odd problem really! The story is this: I use Windows XP Pro and Limewire Pro to connect via modem (yes, I know) to the internet with absolutely NO problem. So, for improved security, I then install Privoxy and Tor (with TorCP) and Peer Guardian to my system. My system also has Zonealarm (free version) as its firewall. Happily, it appears that Tor, Privoxy, and Peer Guardian all work as when I use IE with it (setting proxy to localhost and Port 8118 as advised) my internet browser works perfectly. Another check: Tor also appears to work when I go to: http://serifos.eecs.harvard.edu/cgi-...ddr.pl?tor=1.. HOWEVER, when I try and use Limewire with the Tor-Privoxy system it won't work at all! I've spent hours and hours trying to sort it out, and have followed the various steps suggested on this chat site which I illustrate below, all to no avail... The thing that gets me is that Tor-Privoxy works with my browser fine, and Limewire works with a direct connection with no problem, it is only when I try and pipe Limewire through the Tor-Privoxy system that I cannot get a connection!!! I also tried to go via SOCKS4 and 5 with no joy. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers, LimewireMan ---------------------- Tests I have tried: Test 1: On direct connection to ISP: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ Result: Your test worked! Limewire works fine with direct connection to ISP. Implement Tor-Privoxy and then select: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ Result: Could not access!!!! Limewire will not work at all with connection via Tor-Privoxy. Test 2: Checked LW has full access through ZoneAlarm firewall. Shutdown ZoneAlarm with no benefit. Am not using default Windows Firewall. Test 3: Assess: UPnP support. Followed instructions: http://www.alloy.com.au/support.asp?TID=229 Turned ON Universal plug-and-play. Did not notice "residential gateway" coming up on My Network Places. Test 4: Looked at specific issues for ZoneAlarm. No other firewall is running. Did have Microsoft Antispyware running but shutdown with no benefit. As said before - shutdown with no good effect. Test 5: After 15+ mins note that there is a wall of bricks on the globe (status bar). Also note that when attempt to connect it runs through a lot of possibilities on the "connections" screen in only a very few minutes and then ceases! Test 6: (Part II) Deleted C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire with no joy. ------------------------------------------- end |

![]() Some more information (including log messages) for my problem above!! Actually, I did a search and found several other people on this forum that have also run into the same problem of being unable to use Limewire with Tor-Privoxy and yet being able to use IE with Tor-Privoxy for no apparent reason. I thought I'd contibute a few log message from Tor for various circumstances. Firstly, when I select Socks 4 in Limewire and set localhost and Port 9050 I get this: Feb 17 01:44:37.859 [Warn] fetch_from_buf_socks(): Your application (using socks4 on port 6429) is giving Tor only an IP address. Applications that do DNS resolves themselves may leak information. Consider using Socks4A (e.g. via privoxy or socat) instead. Feb 17 01:44:38.765 [Notice] Tried for 66 seconds to get a connection to [scrubbed]:7743. Giving up. When I set HTTP Proxy with Localhost and Port 8118 in *Internet Explorer* it works FINE but I get this: Feb 17 01:54:33.781 [Notice] circuit_log_path(): internal (high-uptime) circ (length 3, exit sasquatch): Pegdymmiv2(open) prospero(open) sasquatch(open) Feb 17 01:55:32.453 [Notice] connection_ap_expire_beginning(): Stream is 15 seconds late on address '[scrubbed]'. Retrying. Feb 17 01:55:32.453 [Notice] circuit_log_path(): internal (high-uptime) circ (length 3, exit b0red): jnz(open) torzone2(open) b0red(open) When I set HTTP Proxy with localhost and Port 8118 in LImewire I get NOTHING ON THE LOG!! Limewire simply assumes I don't have a connection and says so! The Tor Bandwith Usage shows no action. The "Connections" just speeds through the various Ultrahost IPs really fast, and then gives up (at least with SOcks 4 above it thought about it for a while). My othe settings on Limewiare are: Under "listening port" I've set 46000 (for want of a better number, but it doesn't seem to matter), and router Configuration is Use UPnP. Someone MUST know how to fix this problem - it's driving me bananas. And on two common programs like Limewire and Privoxy-Tor - I mean, don't we all want good internet security??? ![]() Thanks LOTR! Tracking through that post I've seen you've suggested some tests. On the LW Prefs-Bug-Report I get: Limewire connecting directly to ISP (Tor-Privoxy off) gives: Is Connected: true Received Incoming Session: True Limewire connecting to ISP via Tor-Privoxy gives: Is Connected: false Received Incoming Session: True Thanks! |

![]() Thanks LOTR. I've tried setting "Listen on Port" to numbers between 49152 - 65535 (eg 55000). Limewire still works fine with the changed port when I set "no proxy" but stops working when I change it to "HTTP proxy:localhost:8118". I also removed Limewire Pro and installed Limewire Classic and got the same result. Limewire doesn't have Socks4a so I guess that means I can't connect directly to TOR (rather than Privoxy) with localhost:9050 (it doesn't work with SOCKS4 or 5) I gather I'm obliged to use HTTP proxy:localhost:8118 as that's what Privoxy is looking for. My own knowledge of Tor-Privoxy is pretty limited, just what I know from reading their sites: http://tor.eff.org/ and http://www.privoxy.org/ Thanks! |

![]() Thanks Grandpa - sorted as advised. I'm starting to wonder whether the problem is at the Privoxy level. Specifically, with Limewire having proxy as localhost with Port 8118, and going into the Privoxy configuration file and setting debug = 2,4,16 and showing the Privoxy logfile gives: Feb 18 01:33:15 Privoxy(00452) Connect: Denying suspicious CONNECT request from 127.0.0.1 Feb 18 01:33:15 Privoxy(03480) Connect: Denying suspicious CONNECT request from 127.0.0.1 Feb 18 01:33:15 Privoxy(03052) Connect: Denying suspicious CONNECT request from 127.0.0.1 Feb 18 01:33:15 Privoxy(01608) Connect: accept connection ... Feb 18 01:33:15 Privoxy(01632) Connect: Denying suspicious CONNECT request from 127.0.0.1 Feb 18 01:33:15 Privoxy(03068) Writing: HTTP/1.0 403 Connection not allowable X-Hint: If you read this message interactively, then you know why this happens ,-) And Limewire simply states it can't make a connection! From other posts, I'm guessing the solution is to modify the ports available in the default action file of Privoxy, viz: +limit-connect{-3, 7, 20-100, 443, 500-} \ Then I restart Privoxy and Limewire and the log shows: Feb 18 01:38:00 Privoxy(03480) Connect: OK Feb 18 01:38:00 Privoxy(03480) Connect: accept connection ... I hope this is all sensible to someone more familiar with the various Ports and Protocols of these beasts.... Has anyone got any ideas from these log files? ps: I can be contact directly on: ow7fvz002@sneakemail.com Thanks for your patience guys!!! LimeWireMan. ![]() |

![]() A user on sourceforge kindly pointed out that Privoxy is for HTTP only, and that Limewire "will not work if you have either a web-only proxy or a SOCKS provxy" (quote from Limewire FAQ below): See: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/faq.shtml#fir1 Apparently, Tor-Privoxy is really for anonymous browsing rather than becoming bogged down on P2P traffic. So, for Limewire, another user recommends using: i2p, mute, or ants for anonymity. (Source: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/news...full~days=2000) The web sites for these anonymisers are: i2p: http://www.i2p.net/ mute: http://mute-net.sourceforge.net/ ants: http://antsp2p.sourceforge.net/ Thanks again for your help LOTR. Anyone please correct me if they have managed to get Limewire working with Privoxy-Tor!! LimeWireMan. ![]() |
