Ok...firstly your Java is a bit outdated.. Try uninstalling your Java from the add/remove programs and then re-install the JRE 5.12 offline version....(4th one down) Java SE Downloads - Previous Release - JDK 5 If that doesn't help... Try deleting your preference folder... Fixes for Limewire when LW isn't operating as it should Still no luck.... Well Dunno for some of the important questions isn't going to help me help you... Who do you pay to have the internet on ?? If you turn the little box (Modem/router) upside down that you connect to, to get your internet it will tell you the name and model number for it... |
I tried updating java and that didn't work so i tried to delete the preference folder and/or the .limewire folder like the link said but i couldn't find that. How exactly do u find it? We pay telus for net and I couldn't find anything on the bottom of my router. Is there perhaps somewhere else this would be? |
I figured out how to download the .limewire folder and i did so. But it still won't work. Please help! |
What do you mean by you downloaded the .limewire folder ?? You are running 4.12.11, did you also look for the folder named LimeWire and delete it as well ???? |
oh srry i meant i deleted the .limewire folder not downloaded it. Thats one of the suggestions that the link u sent me said |
Hasn't been any replies for a week!!!! U guys!!!! now ive been without LW for almost a month!!!!!!!!!!!! HHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! |

That folder's hidden by default, so you'll have to show hidden files & folders in order to see it. Have you made sure that your Windows firewall's configured properly? User can't connect Try that port 6346 test again. If the page still won't load, sounds like something's blocking LW's default port. In LW go tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 64049 (or something in the range of 49152 - 65535) >Apply > ok. Most routers have an internal firewall, but it's a bit hard to help with yours if we don't know the brand or model:o |
Sorry about that. I looked for the folder, but i only got as far as C:\Documents and Settings\your username I couldn't find Application Data\LimeWire I went on the link that you sent me, and i have the connection bar that stays at one and the firewall blocking. (I had my firewall on before and it was working fine, but when it didn't work, i disabled it but it still didn't work so since then i have enabled it again.) I don't hav the LW pro version, (i dont know if that has any thing to do with it, but) I don't have the connections tab that it showed in the link. I tried that test again, but it still didn't work so i changed the listening port to 64049 but it still didn't work. I looked again on my router for the brand and model and I found some info. Im not sure what you need, but it says, 2wire gateway and There were some numbers on there that i don't know whether you need or not. Hope you can help me now, Soccerblonde |
Ok, what you have to do is make it so that you can see hidden files & folders. Go to My Computer. Now click on Tools > Folder Options > View. Put a dot in the circle next to 'show hidden files & folders' > Apply > ok. Now, you should be able to see the Application Data folder & also the LimeWire one within App Data. Delete that LimeWire folder. Only do this when LW is properly closed. Yep, tell us what numbers are on that 2wire device:) |
I made it so i could see the hidden files and folders and i found the app data folder. But when i went in it, i couldn't find the LimeWire folder. The router has one set of numbers on it that says, 2700HG-E. There is also a bar code and stuff. Do u need that? Then there is a thing that says WAN MAC Address: 00:18:3F:79:50:88 (i don't know if it has anything to do with it, but i don't hav a mac) Thanx for replying so quickly, SoccerBlonde |
1 Attachment(s) Restart LW, then shut it down again. Once it's properly closed, go back into Application Data & look for that LimeWire folder...it should be there. Delete it. Attachment 3606 Try port forwarding for your 2wire. The instructions are here. Port Forwarding for the 2 Wire 2700HG-E LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the device all have to be the same number;) |
I couln't find the LimeWire folder in Aplication Data, but when i searched, i found A folder called LimeWire in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs I also found one in C:\Program Files. Would any of those possibly be it? On the Port forwarding, I got to the part where you enter the ip address into the address bar. Where do i find my IP address? Also, I got confused there where it said: Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser. In the picture above the address bar has Google in it. Just replace all of that with the ip address of your router. By default the ip address should be set to 192.168.1.254. What does all that mean? Thanx for all your help, SoccerBlonde |
1 Attachment(s) Don't delete those other LW folders!! Reinstall LW. Make sure to use the offline installer (when you click to download & a box pops up, ignore it. You'll see a link to download using the offline installer, inside an orange box on the download page...use that offline installer). Install that new version, it'll automatically remove the one you're using now. Once it's installed, restart your computer & open LW. Give it a couple of minutes...see if the new version will connect. If it doesn't, go & look again for that LimeWire folder. It should definitely be there in the Application Data folder. For your port forwarding: Once you've opened your browser, type that IP (192.168.1.254) into the address bar. Check the screenshot here Attachment 3608 That IP is just the default one for your router (mine's 192.168.1.1...they're different for different routers), when you type that into the address bar & hit enter, your router's pages should open. |
I installed the offline installer and it removed the old version. I restarted my computer and opened up LW again. I waited a few minutes for it to connect and i still could only to the first bar of connection. So I looked again for the LimeWire folder. The LimeWire folder still isn't there. I don't understand why not. I even tryed typing it in at the top but it just says: Cannot find file C:\Documents and Settings\*username\Application Data\LimeWire. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct. since that didn't work, i tried the port forwarding again. I got past that part, (thanx for the help) and finished the port forwarding. I went back on to LW and restarted it. I gave it a few minutes to connect, but im still stuck at bar one. this is getting ridiculus! Thanx for sticking with me, |
Still not working!! I have no idea how im going to survive without LW!!! |
New tech geek My children are dragging me into the 21st century. I'm a school teacher that has just purchased an iPod and now wanting to download "stuff". I have recently downloaded LW. It worked for about a week. Then for some reason my Internet got disconnected. I reinstalled that and ever since then I cannot get more than one bar on the connection. I have the latest JAVA. I have tried all the tips from the "Lord of the Rings" person. The only thing that I can't get to work is the password when I'm trying to put in the new IP code thing. (I know, I'm using such great technical term). Can anyone help me. A willing student. |
birdy: I just went on add/remove programs and removed LW. then i went on LW's site and downloaded the new 4.13.8 beta version. I still can only get the first bar of connection green. This absolutly ridiculus! Isn't there anything I can do? What is wrong with my cocmputer!?! |
Don't uninstall LW via add/remove programs, it can cause problems. The way to uninstall a version is to either reinstall a newer version (uninstalls the old one automatically) or go start > all programs > LW & use the uninstall option. Have you tried any other ports in the range that I gave you earlier? If you change port numbers again, remember that port number forwarded within your router will also have to change. Try Frostwire, see if that connects. Some people who's LW will never connect have had success with FW. Don't ask me why. If you want to try, this is the official site for download. FrostWire.com » Official Website & Free Download « Or try BearShare. Use the version that Aaron recommends here. BearShare has been sabotaged. The only other thing that I can think of is that AT&T have started blocking p2p for you right now (apparently they do that sometimes). Read Aaron's posts in these threads for more info. Router Blocking Limewire! no connection. help please!! Firewall/Proxy Settngs http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...379#post202379 Just for the record, these are other things that soccerblonde has tried: Installing JRE 1.5.0_11 Reverting back to LW 4.12.6 Making sure that LW wasn't running in Task Manager before deleting prefs. |
I had the same problem that you guys have. Mine was solved by my son-in-law. You have to remove the Limewire program from Add/Remove program and you have to delete all entries in the registry that relate to Limewire. Ctrl F can help you find Limewire entries. Then download a new copy of Limewire and Va la! you are in business. The firewall will still show on the icon but you will get all five green bars. |
I installed both FW (i really like this verion but still was stuck at bar one and got the same message when i searched) and BS (i didn't like this one and i don't know what was wrong with it, whatever i searched for, no messages popped up and niether did and search results) Im going to try the other suggestions and post back. btw, should i try art_lover24's suggestion? (no offense) |
does my isp connect with AT&T? if so can u give me more info on this? on most of Aaron's posts it says that it only blocks it for a few weeks. Mine has been out for over a month now! |
Sorry about that, I read somebody else's system details instead of yours (there were a couple of other posters in this thread). So ignore that AT&T info. I've never heard of Telus blocking p2p. Did you ever try any any other port numbers? It would be worth your while to try, as it's an easy setting to change. What security programs are you using? Have you updated or upgraded any programs since your LW used to work? |
ok no big d. i didn't upgrade or update and programs except the ones that either u or ww told me to or i have otherwise posted. I think the only security im using is windows firewall, but if there were any others, where would i find out? im going to try changing the port numbers and see if it helps |
ps i am also trying the frostwire forum. just thought id let u know so i can maybe give u any info that they come up with. |
Hi everyone, You are probably all barking up the wrong tree updating Java and fiddling with firewalls (if the problem is that LW used to work and now it doesn't). The problem is to do with the Gnutella Web Cache (GWebCache) - basically this is a bunch of web servers which have a persistent memory of other peers on the network - without it everyone would be blindly trying all machines on the internet on all ports until it found someone to pair with. Somehow this has got out of date in LimeWire and you can't set it to something new in the LimeWire preferences. This is how I fixed it on my Mac - I have no idea about XP... 1. Quit LimeWire completely 2. Find LimeWire's gnutella config file and move it somewhere else e.g. on Mac rename ~/Library/Preferences/LimeWire/gnutella.net to ~/Library/Preferences/LimeWire/gnutella.net.old 3. go here Gnutella web cache scan report and copy a high ranking GWebCache URL into your copy buffer (e.g. Skulls! Multi-Network WebCache 0.2.8) (note: use the URL of that link, not the underlined text) 4. Create a new file called ~/Library/Preferences/LimeWire/gnutella.net containing the GWebCache URL (e.g. Skulls! Multi-Network WebCache 0.2.8) and nothing else (well maybe a newline after it) 5. Start LimeWire again (I had to quit and restart LW one more time before I could type in the search box for some reason) note that you may have broken some other config (e.g. firewall setting) while trying to get LW to work. Someone should post this as sticky (with Windows instructions) if it helps a lot of people. |
worked for me in xp I did a search in files and folders and windows found gnutella.net I right clicked on it and renamed it to gnutella.old I closed the search box and fired up limewire and it connected like it used to before after about 30 seconds. Thank you very much for your post, everything else I tried from this thread failed to work. very simple solution to a frustrating problem, thanks again. :super: |
This worked GREAT!!! the answer to all my problems!!! U ROCK!!:xirokrotima: |
This may be my problem I don't have a gnutella in my files and folders. How do I fix that??? |
how do i create a new file though? |

First off, this problem arose for me because I didn't use LW for a year or more. During this time, all the cached peers and web cache URLs became invalid. Making the new gnutella.net file containing just one valid URL should work, e.g.: http : //gwc.eod.cc/skulls.php note you must remove the spaces around the ":" (I had to add those to stop the forum script making a nice underlined link) If you can't make a simple text file then I hope someone else will help you. As people have said, deleting the file may work, since then LW will try again with default GWebCache URLs. |
sudden stop from working fine having experimented for several hours and knowing an absolute i.e that my router/firewall/java settings were fine before LW stopped connecting, I've finally got it up and running again BUT I'm sure that the above solution only applies in situations where the cache hasn't been updated for quite some time (as Farj3R says) and it is definitely rewritten each time the app is started which means inserting a new cache url may be unnecessary. I personally found that increasing the locale preferencing setting finally did the trick - still unsure why but was always convinced that a preferences file was corrupted somewhere within the .limewire folder |
The same result you will get, if you delete your prefs folder. |
on the frostwire forum they finally solved my problem! it was so simple! i just went on to file>connect and i had a full connection! hope this works for anyone |
I can't get frostwire to work either. I have Windstream ISP and a Speedstream DSL modem. I think I read on one these threads that Windstream was a problem.:( |

Cant Connect |
Don't know if you have found a solution to your problem yet or not, but my kids have had the same issue since I installed Limewire Pro. I was able to get Turbo-Charged Connection, but they could only get one bar like you. I tried several things over the months to no avail. I went step-by-step tonight to see what was different between our accounts. We are using Vista Premium. I discovered that I had Parental Controls turned on their accounts. When I turned it off they were able to get full speed connection. I have not tried to make minor changes to Parental Controls to see if a full speed connection could be made or not. Hope that this helps. |
maxsound2000 Hi. Thanks very much for your input, Im sure it will be looked at, Vista is still quite problematic at present. Peace. |
