Slow Downloads vonage router??

I have been having numerous problems i am new to the computer had it so messed up i was unable to start it the other day-i was missing my NTFS ??whatever that is so the only thing i could do to fix it was put my recovery cd that came with my computer in i think that fixed it but im really not too sure.......So all was fine last week downloads going smooth etc.....by the way i have windows xp-and cable
then i got this vonage phone and i think that may be my problem,my downloads are going at 12kbs and such i dont know how to troubleshoot or fix anything has anyone heard of this vonage causing a problem ??? its a motorola modem that came with the vonage and i was having firewall problems i cant get the brick off i have LW as an exception on my windows firewall and i have my firewalls off on my McAfee and still have the brick if anyone can help me id really appreciate it i have only had this computer a month and i already have it screwed up and like i said i dont really know what im doing .........Thank U-Nancy

System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) will enable us to hopefully find where the problem is.

1. For a start, if you are using McAffee firewall, then make sure XP firewall is turned off. And make sure LW is allowed thru the mcaffee firewall.

2. Sounds like your motorola device needs its UPnP enabled, else port forwarded.

I have windows xp-suddenlink modem for my cable/computer ARRIS CM450-A and then Vonage router Motorola VT2442-VD I didnt have any problems with my download speed until i Hooked up the Motorola VT2442-VD I check my download speed test and it comes up 1547 or so but my LW downloads will only allow between 50-200 i have my McAfee uninstalled and my windows firewall off and i still have the brick on my LW-How do I go about fixing this,removing the brick ?? I am very new to my computer so i dont have a clue ........................................Thanks-Nancy

Most likely the problem is the Motorola. I notice it does have UPnP abilities. See Port Forwarding for the Motorola VT2442 but only as a reference. Don't follow their directions just yet. Log into the motorola as suggested half-way down the page. Then click Advanced tab & top, then the UPnP tab at the left-top side. Make sure it is enabled. Tell me if it already was or was not when you accessed the UPnP settings section.

Yes I looked in the box it came in and found more info....genius my UPnP was disabled so I enabled it and something called multicast was also disabled so I also enabled that (was this ok??)I looked around in the page at the firewall info do I also want to turn that off ?? it says something about NAT & SPI it seems like i can turn them both off or just the NAT any suggestions?? also my brick is still on my LW .... i am so puzzled

Both UPnP & NAT should be turned on. What UPnP does is, it allows LW to communicate with the motorola device to request port(s) it needs to be opened whilst the program is running. NAT offers some protection against hackers. I am not sure about SPI or multicast.

Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & make sure UPnP is enabled. After any changes in the router, you'd need to save them. Some brands of router you actually need to reboot/restart them for changes to take effect. I am not sure about motorola, but worth a try.

I did some googling, & it seems (from my impression) multicast is not required & may result in degradation of performance. SPI can be disabled too. (Stateful Packet Inspection/Denial of Service firewall technology). SPI involves examining packets of data downloaded from the net via the router and denying suspicious packets, because the router knows what type of programs might be utilizing a particular protocol. Denial of Service attacks from hackers are but one type of attack the router helps to prevent via this technology. Turning the SPI firewall off in that router is not a significant difference in security. When you turn the SPI firewall on (Strict NAT), it starts inspecting the incoming packets and cross checks the source of the packet with the destination recorded in the NAT table. It will only allow packets through that came from the host that was the destination of the connection in the first place. (reference from discussion SBG900 drop-out/Reboot Problem - Cable - BigPond Different model Motorola, but similar slow problems whilst using p2p. Most of them port forwarded.)

Failing all of this, you may need to port forward.

Do you use wireless connection from the Motorola or via ethernet cable? The motorola 900 seems to struggle with p2p use when used in wireless mode. Same might be true of yours.



I found this on a particular site, not sure if it applies:

1. Select "Start" -> "Settings" -> ''Control Panel'' -> "Network and Dial-up Connections"
2. Right-click "Local Network Connections" and select "Properties"
3. Select "Advance" tab
4. Deselect the "Internet Connection Firewall" option
5. Click "OK" to confirm your changes and exit the panel


1. Launch the web browser from the computer that is connected to the Motorola SBG1000.
2. Type in the IP address <http://192.168.100.1> on the address bar of the web browser and press <Enter>
3. Login to the admin page of the Motorola SBG1000. The default User ID is <admin> and password is <motorola>
4. After you have logged in, click on the "Firewall"option on the left side of the page.
5. Under the "Policy", select the "Low" firewall option and click on <Apply> to save the setting.

Uncheck the "Filter Multicast" option and click "Save Settings"
