Problem solved by uninstalling original LW (start > all programs > limewire > uninstall) > reinstalling LW using the offline installer > replacing gnutella.net file > rebooting computer.

Smile Yay!

YAY! I must say I've been stumped for hours trying to get LimeWire to connect. I was just about to give up to tell my ISP provider off when I noticed we had a few new post regarding not being able to connect. I read this one, follow the directions and Viola! I'm connected! Thanks so much for this great post.

This is a link to download a gnutella.net file. Download this & save the file to your computer.
zSHARE - gnutella.net

Make sure LW's closed.

Go back to that LimeWire folder. You deleted it & now there'll be a new one in it's place. Double click on the LimeWire folder to open it. Inside, you'll see a heap of files like these
Attachment 3840

See the file called gnutella.net (or gnutella)...delete that one. Leave the LimeWire folder open.

Now copy & paste the gnutella.net file that you downloaded into that folder. Once it's in there, close all those folders that you have open. Restart LW.
I was following the steps up untill this point.
I deleted the limewire folder, then i downloaded the gnutella.net
but the limewire folder is not there

Btw the first limewire folder was in 'Doucuments and settings'-'My name' and the folder was there.

Yep, that's a bit confusing! You got rid of a very old folder & if you're using a newish version of LW...chances are you'll never see that folder again. Now you have to look for a folder in another location...C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\LimeWire.
Check this sticky for more info & screenshots. I've posted it once before but I'll post it again here as well: Fixes for LimeWire
You'll need to delete that LimeWire folder as well. When you start LW a new LimeWire folder will be created. You'll need to open that LimeWire folder to replace the gnutella.net file. Look at post #8 for more info about that...but once the preferences folder has been deleted properly, you might not need to bother with that at all (start LW up & it might connect just fine).

In case anybody else is confused about their folders, hopefully this info below will help, as well as the 'fixes for LimeWire' thread The info below is specific to Windows XP. Vista users should check here for info about showing hidden files & folders and locating their preferences folder: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

It's possible to have either 1 or 2 preferences folders, depending on whether you've used very old versions of LW in the past.

Before deleting the preferences folder, LW must be completely closed. If it's not, deleting the preferences folder will be a waste of time! If you're not sure whether LW is properly closed, check in Task Manager (ctrl/alt/del)...if there's a LW process running, end the process.

OLD PREFERENCES FOLDER NAME & LOCATION

In really old versions of LW, the preferences folder was named .limewire& was located here: C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire.

People who have used older LWs in the past, & have that .limewire folder should delete it.
If people are still using a very old LW (older than 4.9.34) & have never used a newer version of LW then that's the only preferences folder that they'll have.
If you're not sure of whether you might have this older preferences folder...look for it anyway.

People who have used an old version of LW in the past but are now using a newer version should delete this .limewire folder and then look for a preferences folder in the new location.

NEW PREFERENCES FOLDER NAME & LOCATION
If somebody has a newer version of LW (4.9.34 or more recent, right up to the latest version) then they will have a preferences folder in a different location.
The new preferences folder is named LimeWire & is located here: C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\LimeWire. Note that this new folder has no dot in front of it & the name is not all in lower case letters.
People who have this folder named LimeWire should delete it.

Note: The Application Data folder is hidden by default. So, in order to find this LimeWire preferences folder, you'll have to allow hidden files & folders to be seen.
Go to Control Panel, double click on Folder Options & then click on the View tab. Make sure there's a dot in the radio button next to 'Show hidden files and folders' then click Apply & click OK.

A FOLDER IN BOTH LOCATIONS?
Those people who have used both old and newer versions of LW could easily have both old and new preferences folders. In this case, look for the old folder first. If it exists, delete it. Providing that you don't revert back to one of the older LW versions...this .limewire folder won't reappear. It will be history.

Once the old folder is gone, go & delete the new LimeWire folder. Once that folder is deleted & LW is started, a LimeWire folder will appear again exactly where the original one was. This is ok, it's supposed to happen. We just wanted to get rid of the original in case there was some corruption within.
