all of a sudden will not connect (a fix to try)

my limewire has been acting fine for the past six months until very recently i only got one bar. i tried restarting the computer. i downloaded the newer version of limewire. i tried re opening it several times (and yes i have waited, for up to many minutes). i checked my firewalls and they are all set. i have hit the 'connect' button that is under file. and i have deleted it and re installed it. i dont know what else to do

birdy November 10th, 2007 04:58 PM

Try this first: Delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will change all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.
In case you're using Vista: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista

Some people have had connection problems with some Java versions. You can either try updating to the latest version here (I have this one & LW's working fine): Java SE Downloads
or try this older version, which has worked well for lots of people: Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11
Whichever Java version you use, download the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions before installing another one.

If that doesn't help, please give us your details.
System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!

Raffles November 10th, 2007 08:36 PM

i tried searching for that folder and i could not find it. i read the 'Fixes for LW' thing and still was unable to locate the folder. I recently updated my Java just last night and still got nothing.

1. OS version? Windows XP
2. What firewalls you have? Windows Firewall
3. How much ram? dont know
4. Hard Disk space available? 169 MB
5. Connection type? Wireless
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? dont know
7. Where are you trying to connect from? House, where it normally connects from
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? LimeWire 4.14.10 and JS2E Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3 Java
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? no idea
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? says your test works
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? im not
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. second problem with experienced user

birdy November 10th, 2007 08:48 PM

Did you show hidden files & folders? Control panel > folder options > view > check the radio button to show hidden files & folders > apply > ok.
Now the Application Data folder should be visible, look for the LimeWire folder within App Data. That LimeWire folder is the one you need to delete.

Did you remove the updated Java?

Raffles November 10th, 2007 09:03 PM

alright, i got the hidden folders to show but im not finding an application data folder. i did a search for it but no luck. no, i never removed my java its still on here.

sorry about this by the way, i feel like such a nuisance

You're fine...this is a PITA for you:)

Ok, here's what you have to do: Make sure LW is closed. Go to My computer > double click C drive > double click Documents and Settings > double click your username. Now you should see an Application Data folder...double click that.

Once you're inside that App Data folder, you should see a folder named LimeWire
Attachment 3839
That LimeWire folder should be there;) Delete the sucker. Then restart LW & see if it connects.

Raffles November 10th, 2007 09:26 PM

alright i got it. i deleted it but i still only have one bar. i deleted it while LW was closed, then i re-opened LW and had to click 'Next' a bunch of times until it said 'finish' ect. ect.

Ok that's good, it means that you deleted the folder properly.

This is a link to download a gnutella.net file. Download this & save the file to your computer.
zSHARE - gnutella.net

Make sure LW's closed.

Go back to that LimeWire folder. You deleted it & now there'll be a new one in it's place. Double click on the LimeWire folder to open it. Inside, you'll see a heap of files like these
Attachment 3840

See the file called gnutella.net (or gnutella)...delete that one. Leave the LimeWire folder open.

Now copy & paste the gnutella.net file that you downloaded into that folder. Once it's in there, close all those folders that you have open. Restart LW.

jkern32187 November 10th, 2007 09:43 PM

I have been having similar problems... but I have a mac.. I'm not sure how to take care of it... any suggestions?

Raffles November 10th, 2007 09:44 PM

alright i did everything, but when i opened the LW folder there was no gnutella file but i went ahead and slipped then newly downloaded one in there and still only one bar

birdy November 10th, 2007 11:14 PM

Problem solved by uninstalling original LW (start > all programs > limewire > uninstall) > reinstalling LW using the offline installer > replacing gnutella.net file > rebooting computer.
:)

coachloverchikk November 10th, 2007 11:26 PM

It Works I am so happy

I followed the instructions above with removing the limewire folder, copying the gnutella and pasting and it worked. Im connected. Thank you so much

sovani November 11th, 2007 08:33 AM

Thanks to the above posts I was able to fix LW too (had trouble finding the folder that had to be deleted)

Thx! :)

gimorale November 11th, 2007 11:45 AM

Yay!

YAY! I must say I've been stumped for hours trying to get LimeWire to connect. I was just about to give up to tell my ISP provider off when I noticed we had a few new post regarding not being able to connect. I read this one, follow the directions and Viola! I'm connected! Thanks so much for this great post.

stevemilky November 13th, 2007 02:29 PM

I was following the steps up untill this point.
I deleted the limewire folder, then i downloaded the gnutella.net
but the limewire folder is not there

Btw the first limewire folder was in 'Doucuments and settings'-'My name' and the folder was there.

stevemilky November 13th, 2007 04:48 PM

I've tried it again still the wall is there. :(

Raffles November 13th, 2007 04:50 PM

if the wall is there it means you have a firewall.
go check your firewalls

Yep, that's a bit confusing! You got rid of a very old folder & if you're using a newish version of LW...chances are you'll never see that folder again. Now you have to look for a folder in another location...C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\LimeWire.
Check this sticky for more info & screenshots. I've posted it once before but I'll post it again here as well: Fixes for LimeWire
You'll need to delete that LimeWire folder as well. When you start LW a new LimeWire folder will be created. You'll need to open that LimeWire folder to replace the gnutella.net file. Look at post #8 for more info about that...but once the preferences folder has been deleted properly, you might not need to bother with that at all (start LW up & it might connect just fine).

In case anybody else is confused about their folders, hopefully this info below will help, as well as the 'fixes for LimeWire' thread:p The info below is specific to Windows XP. Vista users should check here for info about showing hidden files & folders and locating their preferences folder: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

It's possible to have either 1 or 2 preferences folders, depending on whether you've used very old versions of LW in the past.

Before deleting the preferences folder, LW must be completely closed. If it's not, deleting the preferences folder will be a waste of time! If you're not sure whether LW is properly closed, check in Task Manager (ctrl/alt/del)...if there's a LW process running, end the process.

OLD PREFERENCES FOLDER NAME & LOCATION

In really old versions of LW, the preferences folder was named .limewire& was located here: C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire.

People who have used older LWs in the past, & have that .limewire folder should delete it.
If people are still using a very old LW (older than 4.9.34) & have never used a newer version of LW then that's the only preferences folder that they'll have.
If you're not sure of whether you might have this older preferences folder...look for it anyway.

People who have used an old version of LW in the past but are now using a newer version should delete this .limewire folder and then look for a preferences folder in the new location.

NEW PREFERENCES FOLDER NAME & LOCATION
If somebody has a newer version of LW (4.9.34 or more recent, right up to the latest version) then they will have a preferences folder in a different location.
The new preferences folder is named LimeWire & is located here: C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\LimeWire. Note that this new folder has no dot in front of it & the name is not all in lower case letters.
People who have this folder named LimeWire should delete it.

Note: The Application Data folder is hidden by default. So, in order to find this LimeWire preferences folder, you'll have to allow hidden files & folders to be seen.
Go to Control Panel, double click on Folder Options & then click on the View tab. Make sure there's a dot in the radio button next to 'Show hidden files and folders' then click Apply & click OK.

A FOLDER IN BOTH LOCATIONS?
Those people who have used both old and newer versions of LW could easily have both old and new preferences folders. In this case, look for the old folder first. If it exists, delete it. Providing that you don't revert back to one of the older LW versions...this .limewire folder won't reappear. It will be history.

Once the old folder is gone, go & delete the new LimeWire folder. Once that folder is deleted & LW is started, a LimeWire folder will appear again exactly where the original one was. This is ok, it's supposed to happen. We just wanted to get rid of the original in case there was some corruption within.

DarkPhantom November 13th, 2007 09:44 PM

Thanks birdy!!!!

Deleted the folder from the Application Data and it worked!!!!!:aweof:

lwftl&w November 14th, 2007 12:15 PM

birdy, i had the folder .limewire, which i deleted.
I did this
Quote:

Go to Control Panel, double click on Folder Options & then click on the View tab. Make sure there's a dot in the radio button next to 'Show hidden files and folders' then click Apply & click OK.
And i can now see the application folder in
C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Application Data\LimeWire.
Should i delete the limewire folder in Application Data?

falsehammer November 14th, 2007 03:37 PM

birdy is my new hero.

I had all these problems and was ready to shoot my computer. If followed birdy's advise and I'm sound as a pound. Bless you birdy.

birdy November 14th, 2007 04:32 PM

Hi lwftl&w,

Yes, delete the whole LimeWire folder that's within Application Data. Make sure LW's closed first;) Once that folder's deleted...start LW & it'll take you through the setup wizard again. If it doesn't connect, restart your computer & then start LW again.

If there's still no connection, try replacing that gnutella.net file which lives inside the LimeWire folder (no need to delete that prefs folder again). Post #8 of this thread tells you how to do that.

BIRDY/
Uninstalled LW, unistalled old Java & added new, re-installed new LW, still NO connection. Re did same , deleted & added NEW Gnutella. Went to my comp, documents, appl. data folder, & NO LIMEWIRE in folder!
I re cehceked & LW is in system, under exceptions in AVG security, listed in programs, but NOT after I dbl clicked thre appl. data folder! Still one green bar & rest red. Also says "sharing 0 files".
Did I miss a step somewhere?

birdy November 15th, 2007 01:36 PM

I'm not sure what's happened, but if you're using a version of LW newer than 4.9.34 then you must have a LimeWire folder somewhere. You would've put the gnutella.net file inside the LimeWire folder, so it must be there!
What version of LW are you using?

Try starting again from scratch...restart your computer & then go through the steps in this link: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...tml#post296950

lwftl&w November 15th, 2007 02:06 PM

Birdy. I love you.:whistling:

So i hoped to post #8, followed them instructions. But there was no gnutella.net file inside the lw folder. So i just put the gnutella.net that i downloaded into the limewire folder.
