LW will not connect

I had the basic LW. I upgraded to pro and now LW will not connect, the connection only has 1 bar:computer2:. I have been trying for two days now. Can someone please help me with a solution?

millijoolz May 15th, 2008 07:14 AM

Same here, with the exception I didn't upgrade yet. But the strange thing is that this problem occured from the moment I visited LW's pages with the intention to purchase the Pro version. Must be total coincidence.

I hope that the answer to this problem also addresses a solution for when you are on a Mac, OS X. I have searched throuhg old topics but haven't found that as of yet.

Thanks in advance!
Milli

LW won't connect

Help!! I had basic LW and kept having to reinstall to get it to connect. I thought if I updated to PRO it would work but still won't connect more than one bar. Someone please help me. I tried all the suggestions and it still won't connect:tease:

millijoolz May 18th, 2008 06:42 PM

I have taken drastic measures that worked. I restored everything to the default settings and I am back in business. Have you tried that?

Milli.

mombaby1 May 19th, 2008 04:12 AM

How do you do that? I have some knowledge about cpu's, but not every thing. Just give simple instructions on what worked for you . Thank you

millijoolz May 19th, 2008 08:31 AM

This is for LW 4.16.7 (NOT Pro, dunno if that makes a difference)

Start LW
Open up 'Preferences'
Click on any subject like 'Saving"
On the bottom there is a button saying 'Restore Defaults', click on that. Now click on 'Apply', also at the bottom.

You should now have restored to all default settings. You may have to go through some adjustments like telling where to save the files like you had to when you first got LW.

But right after I did that I had 5 full green bars.

Good luck!

Regards,
Milli.

millijoolz May 19th, 2008 08:33 AM

I think that Pro or no Pro shouldn't make a difference. Look for 'Preferences', open up any window and click 'restore to default settings' and 'apply'.

Lmk if it worked!

Milli

mysticmusician May 19th, 2008 11:13 AM

Hey, I did that, but i went to options, selected them all and put restore defaults. I then restarted it so that it would work and all my songs were gone and i had about 5000! It didn't make it connect either, it just stayed with the one light and didn't do anything. Is there anyway to get back my songs and to make my LW work?

millijoolz May 19th, 2008 01:36 PM

The songs must have been saved somewhere, LW asks you in which folder you want to save them to when you set it up. You cannot have lost the songs by only resetting to defaults.

Do a search for a title you remember. Are you on a PC or a Mac?

mysticmusician May 19th, 2008 02:07 PM

im on a PC.

mysticmusician May 19th, 2008 02:22 PM

I went to search, and it said under C:\My Music. But when I went there, none of it was there. Then I went to my LW folder, and to saved files, and it only had the one song I had downloaded after I restored the defaults.

JeffBinsted May 19th, 2008 02:53 PM

I think i understand your problem if you just recently installed a new limewire they are somewhere in your computer but if theyre not go to options and look in your saved section it should give you your location of your saved filed

Cheers,
Jeff Binsted

millijoolz May 19th, 2008 03:01 PM

There must be another song title that you can remember, other than the one you downloaded the last?? And do you have iTunes?

gingerchapman May 20th, 2008 06:26 PM

Connecting in Vista

FYI, I was having all the same problems as everyone else mentioned...one bar, couldn't get beyong the "connecting" stage. I just recently purchased the new version of LW Pro. It worked for a couple days then quit. I messed around with the port settings, firewall settings, etc. but couldn't get it to connect. Anyway, I just updated windows with all available updates and it seems to have fixed the issue.

thirteenth June 25th, 2008 12:56 PM

I downloaded and installed free version 4.18.3 It worked fine at first but now when I start it it takes 10 to 15 minutes to connect. I'm on Rogers high speed. When I do connect it's fast as ever. Any ideas what's going on.

Help, I can't connect

I've been using Limewire for a couple of years now and I can't seem to connect. Nothing has changed on my computer since I used it last and I've tried the solutions offered. Can anyone offer any help?

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows XP.
2. What firewalls you have? 2, windows firewall and telus security firewall. Both have limewire exceptions
3. How much ram? 1.00 GB ram
4. Hard Disk space available? not sure but it's alot
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) i think broadband, it know it's high speed
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Router is 2wire gateway model number not sure where to look
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? house
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. Limewire 4.18.3 and Java 1.6.0_05
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Telus
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? My test worked
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. no
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. new problem, i've been using for 2 years plus
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image Yes
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? i believe its UPnP enabled
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...lies/smile.gifI use Telus security
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). Canada

Finding out the brand name & model number of the modem/router will help. :)

Another suggestion is to close LW, install FrostWire & if it connects, then close it down, re-open LW. ;)

No we can't help much at all without these details as the forum rules specify you must include with your post *sighs* -> System details - help us to help you (click on blue link)

You wish help on this forum yet you REFUSE to read the Forum Rules ? pfft !!! As a new person signing up to these forums you will have seen links to the forum rules at least three times. And they are listed at the top of each section of the forums. ;) :)

When updating to this new version it's best to delete your previous LW preferences folder. :)

Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.)

kathyrose June 25th, 2008 02:16 PM

the modem/router is called 2Wire Gateway and I believe the model number is 2700HG-E. I hope this helps.

thirteenth June 25th, 2008 03:24 PM

Thank you LOTR. I did as you suggested and it's working fine now. :aweof:

miamiblue June 25th, 2008 03:31 PM

Success!

I just signed up for this forum because after years of flawless use I couldn't connect to Limewire as of yesterday. I tried adding LW to the firewall's exceptions, etc. to no avail. Then I visited the link that LOTR mentioned:

REPLACE gnutella.net FILE
Quote:
Close LW. Make sure that it’s properly closed by opening Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) & click on the Processes tab. If there’s a LW process running, end the process.

The link below will take you to a file hosting site where you can download a file named gnutella.net.
zSHARE - gnutella.net
If that link doesn't work, try this other one.
gnutella.net

Download that file & save it to your computer. Remember where you've saved the file to.

If you're using XP, look below.

Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > click on the View tab > put a dot in the circle next to ‘show hidden files and folders’ > apply > ok.

Go to Start > click on My Computer > double click on Documents and Settings > double click on the folder with your username > double click on Application Data. Now look for a folder named LimeWire. This folder named LimeWire is your preferences folder. You need to open the LimeWire folder by double clicking on it.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...refsfolder.jpg
Once you’ve opened the LimeWire folder, look for a file named gnutella.net (or it may be named gnutella).
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...la.netfile.jpg
Delete that file. Leave the LimeWire folder open.
If there’s no file named gnutella.net or gnutella, don’t panic...you can put one into the folder.

Go & find the gnutella.net file that you downloaded earlier. Copy that gnutella.net file & paste it into the open LimeWire folder.

Close all folders, restart your computer & then start LW.

If you're using Vista, you'll need to look for your preferences folder in a different place. Try C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire
And more info about how to show hidden files & folders, and how to find the preferences folder here LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista

bl4h June 29th, 2008 02:32 AM

I had the same problem but fixed it. Im using vista32

I found a directory in my user directory called ".limewire"

it was located at "C:\Users\bl4h\.limewire"

Of course that will differ depending on your computer username

I closed limewire pro and deleted that directory completely. when i ran limewire again it brought up the configuration wizard, which didnt come up when i first nstalled it. after going through that everything works fine.

If youre having this prob look for that directory and delete it, or somehow manage to bring up the configuration wizard. maybe it writes some files that are missing and need to be written.

Kevan June 29th, 2008 04:15 AM

Experienced the same problem as you miamiblue and now, after LOTR's instructions, everything's all fixed, such a godsend! Cheers!!!

kjohnson13 June 30th, 2008 07:02 PM

I only get one green bar too and it says it detects a firewall, but I have done everything to turn it off. This only happened with new version. Would buy pro, but hearing everyone having same trouble so NOT!!!

birdy June 30th, 2008 07:10 PM

Try the fixes in the thread below, start off by deleting LW's preferences folder.
If nothing there helps, post back with your system details (that thread has info about the details that we need).
If LW Will Not Connect

adamsagora July 5th, 2008 01:21 AM

Same here

I downloaded LimeWire to my new Dell Inspiron. Worked great for about 24hrs. Now, when I 2xclick from the desktop it gives me the LW Setup page ONLY. Can't go back, or forward and the "Finish" box is whited-out & inaccessable. WTF?
I was thinking it was a LW marketing trick to induce us to buy the PRO version, but reading here, sounds like the pro is just as bad - only now we PAY for it.
Tried LW's page, but - funny thing - no click-thru to post to them...
Funny way to drum up business.

birdy July 5th, 2008 01:47 AM

Please don't complain to us about LW drumming up business...the helpers here are volunteers who do not work for LW.

You've posted onto a thread about LW not connecting. As far as I can see, your post has nothing to do with LW's connection to the network.

Go through the forum sections, find the one most appropriate for your post & start again.

adamsagora July 5th, 2008 02:40 AM

LW still won't connect

No offense, birdy, but you're kind of an idiot. I'm having the same problem as so many other foulks - LW works for awhile - quite nicely, I might add, as i got several hundred good downloads in 24hrs with littls effort - then suddenly I'm stuck in the Setup Wizard.
I've tried the fixes suggested by you, LotR and afew others, but no dice.
If you can't see how that applies to the current thread, maybe you need to get some sleep.
Oh, and if you'll notice, I never stated or implied that anyone here worked for LW - I implied that the bug in the freeware version might be left intentionally to nudge people into buying the "pro" version - which, according to the thread, has happened.

shannon4 July 7th, 2008 08:58 AM

LW says it's connecting and never connects!!

It sounds like I'm having the same exact problem. I've had Vista for over a year and LW connected with no problems till about a couple of months ago. Now, I open it and it says it's connectign and never does, I have also tried everything as far as uninstalling and reinstalling then I just recently switched to LW Pro and it still doesn't connect, I have also tried going back to all of the default settings, going into my computer settings and trying things there, and messing with my firewall configs and still nothing!!
Can someone please help those of us with similair problems?
I think it would be greatly appreciated by all of us!!

adamsagora July 7th, 2008 11:00 AM

Sorry to hear it, but I gave up battling LW and loaded FrostWire. Works like a charm and even recognizes LW downloads! Okay, only SOME LW downloads, but still - not quite starting from scratch.
Try asking LW for your money back - that might work! ;>
Good luck.

I am having similar problems. We have two computers that use LW. The second has Microsoft Vista on it. It was working at first. Now it says there is a firewall issue. Can't figure out where. We have turned off or disabled all the firewalls, but the message is still there and LW will not load. Any suggestions?????

inot566 July 21st, 2008 04:01 PM

LW will not connect

This is what worked for me:uninstall limewire, delete the original downloaded file.Go to CCleaner - Home anddownload the free ccleaner file.Run ccleaner ,restart your computer, download the latest version of lime wire and install it.

Make sure both LimeWires (LW) are not using the same connection or listening port. You can check by going to LW's menu bar, Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewall, & check both listening & connection port sections. If both LW's are using the same port for either connection or listening, then change the LW that isn't connecting to a port number between 49152 - 65535 (64049 is a good one to try.) :)

Don't forget VISTA has it's own firewall. Make sure it has a firewall rule allowing LW full access; User Cant Connect - LimeWire ;)

FYI: routers will not allow two programs or two computers to use the same port number. A router will reserve one port per program per computer.

If using both LW's at the same time, your router, if wireless in particular might be struggling to cope. Wireless devices tend to be erratic & unreliable with bandwidth use.

You can also try suggestions here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html
