Default Can't connect - Tried other fixes from forum

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.

So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Vista with Admin Priv
2. What firewalls you have? Vista and Motorols SBG900 router
3. How much ram? 1GB
4. Hard Disk space available? Tons
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Motorola SBG 900
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? Home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. _ Click to see Sample image LW 4.18.8 Java 1.6.0_11
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Cox
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? it worked
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. NO
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. new prob
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image yes
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? I am not sure
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall AVG Antivirus
16. What country are you living in? US
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc? Just installed LW and it wont connect - I am pretty sure it is my router settings but I can't find how to correct it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Motorolla SBG900 should have UPnP abilities, but unfortunately sometimes UPnP does not work reliably (others have also had problems with this model.) The more reliable answer is to forward a port. To do this, first & most important step is the very first one, set up a static ip: Setting up a Static ip on VISTA (click on blue link). Write this new static ip address down or copy-paste into a notecard because you will need it for the next step.

Second & 3rd steps are described within the next link: Port Forward instructions for Motorola SBG 900 (click on blue link). The default port for LimeWire is 6346, however you can choose any between 49152 - 65535, such as 64049 for example. Best to make both connection & listening port the same.

Some routers need to be rebooted, or at least rebooting computer to get such changes properly into action. Not sure about your brand.

Oh ... in case you have not done already, after these steps, make a firewall rule for LimeWire for Vista's firewall, not too difficult: http://www.limewire.org/wiki/index.p...r_Cant_Connect

Thumbs down Still not working

I have tried deleting EVERYTHING (viewing hidden and system files to make sure it is all gone). I even tried Frostwire. I really do not want to have to disable the firewall completely on my router so it looks like I am just S.O.L when it comes to lime/Frostwire. I have put waaaaay too many hours into this for something that used to work just fine. Thanks for your help. I appreciate that you take the time to help!!

erm ... port forwarding is not removing the firewall. It simply opens a port that would happen if UPnP on your router was working well.

Did you try replacing the Gnutella.net file? If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link)

BTW Cox ISP is known for shaping or blocking specific users at times.

Question wrong terminology

I meant that if the port forwarding did not work as well as everything else not working then maybe disabling the firewall completely would work but now I see from other posts in the forum that that may not work even. Any idea when they are planning on releasing a new version with the workaround? I do appreciate the help though. You Rock!!

So you tried a combination of the other fixes in the above link?
Vista firewall should not be turned off, simply configured to allow LW; User Cant Connect - LimeWire

The fix is not always the same for everyone. Sometimes there's one of many things that might be problematic or a combination of them. Disabling all performance options, replacing gnutella.net file. Or possibly deleting LW prefs, if that does not work, replace gnutella.net file & disable performance options again. Getting rid of old incompletes will most likely help too, stop them 'flooding' your router connection whilst LW is attempting to connect.

So did you set up a static ip & forward a port in your Motorola SBG900? Good ports to try are between ports 49152 - 65535. The same port would need to be added to LW's advanced -> Firewall setting with it set to port forward.

You could try Phex & see if it connects. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/phex-c...-released.html. It's a great program, just not as intuitive to use for new users.

Question misunderstanding

The firewall I was going to disable was on the SBG900. I can't get any of these P2P programs to work. Any other suggestions?

Exclamation Defintely my router

When I turn off the router fire wall everything works fine in Frostwire but even on its lowest setting it blocks. Would someone be willing to take a look at the settings that I have - word doc attachment - and see if anything jumps out at you? It would be greatly appreciated.

Instructions how to port forward your router in my first post above. Did you follow the directions properly? Set up a static ip as the very first step (otherwise it will not work). You could try port forwarding a different port such as one between 49152 - 65535 & set LW's connection & listening ports the same as the one you port forward for the Motorolla.

Perhaps your motorolla has a strength of security setting. Some routers do. I didn't know the motorolla had one but worth investigating. You do need the NAT enabled within your router for safety. Opening a port for LW however should be fine as that's what LW would do automatically using UPnP, however experience on these forums suggests that model does not work well with UPnP which is why port forwarding is generally the best step.
