Exclamation I can't connect with Limewire... Help!

Ok, First off. My Limewire cannot connect to the gnutella servers. it says that there is a connection but cannot connect to the gnutella.

and i have tried to uninstall it and reinstall it. and when i did uninstalled i deleted the roaming data also. i check my windows firewall settings and Limewire is a exeption. and this is what i got when i re downloaded and installed. (latest version as of Dec 18th)

It never did end up connect... sadly. same exact thing "gnutella is disconnected."

i also tried other alternatives such as Frostwire and they fail to connect also. I just wanted help, if anyone knows how to solve this problem.

Firstly on the gnutella network it does not use servers. People connect to others who are acting as ultrapeers.

Default HELP, first time LW user! Same problem

fSame exact problem, not sure where to start to try and fix it. Limewire is an exception on my firewall. thats i really know to do. ive also uninstalled and reinstalled it
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) If using Windows Vista, please tell us whether you have an Administrator user account.
Answer: Vista, administrator user account
2. What firewalls you have?
How do I check all of them? Have mcafee security center, says limewire has "full access" when I check the allowed programs. I read somewhere, that you could have multiple firewalls?
3. How much ram?
200gb
4. Hard Disk space available?
192gb
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
Im not sure, i think broadband?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? (eg: Linksys WRT54Gv4)
We have a qwest actiontec dsl wireless modem model number GT701-WG
kjm fsserr
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)?
home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. _ Click to see Sample image
*It's very important that you tell us whether you're using LW 5*
answer LW 5, the newest, I just downloaded it
lw 5.46 pro
java 1.6.0_17
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
qwest
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
cant connect
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
no
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
1st try at lw
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image
If you're using LW5, there's no firewall icon. In LW go tools > advanced tools...there you'll see whether you're behind a firewall or not.
Click on thumbnail to enlarge the image.
firewall status.jpg
says "incoming searches people on p2p are now searching for...." other than that i dont really see anything, just a blank set up
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?
how do i tell??
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall
mcaffe
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland).
United states
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc?
First time LW user, havent even connected for the first time.
This information can be vital
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth, some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions, or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

I don't use Vista, but here goes...

If you're using McAfee's firewall, check that Vista's firewall is off: Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows firewall. If it's on then turn it off... 2 software firewalls running together will conflict with each other. Stick with the McAfee firewall. Try removing all LW rules from the firewall & then add them from scratch.

Your port test didn't work, which isn't a good sign... LW's default port is blocked by something. Maybe your ISP?
If you search on Google, there's conflicting info about QWest blocking ports. Most people say they're not. But they may be throttling p2p (file sharing) bandwidth. Changing port numbers is an easy thing to try in any case ...

In LW go tools > options > advanced > Listening Ports. Change LW's listening port to 65000 (or you can try any port in the range of 49152 - 65535). Check to see whether the Use Universal Plug & Play button is checked. If not, check that button > click ok.

Check whether UPnP is enabled within your router: Log into your router by opening a browser & typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Once you're logged into your router, click on Setup > click on Advanced Setup (left side) > click on UPnP (left side). If UPnP is already enabled then you can just close out of the router setup. If UPnP isn't enabled then check the button to use UPnP > click on Save & Restart (left side).

There are also other fixes to try here: If LW 5 Will Not Connect

Let us know if none of that helps & we can give you instructions for port forwarding.

Default Still can't connect

Thanks for suggesting those things with instructions, very very helpful. I did all of those things except on this part:

Check whether UPnP is enabled within your router: Log into your router by opening a browser & typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Once you're logged into your router, click on Setup > click on Advanced Setup (left side) > click on UPnP (left side). If UPnP is already enabled then you can just close out of the router setup. If UPnP isn't enabled then check the button to use UPnP > click on Save & Restart (left side).
WAN IP Address Wireless Settings Wireless MAC Authentication Wireless Advanced Settings DHCP Server Services Blocking Website Blocking Remote Management Port Forwarding DMZ Hosting Firewall Dynamic Routing NAT Static Routing IP QoS Setting Telnet Timeout Setting LAN IP Address
I clicked on advanced setup and the left hand menu looked like this above. I looked through them but didnt see anything specifically for UPnP, do you have any suggestions on what I should click or check for under one of these links?
Also on this part:
LW go tools > options > advanced > Listening Ports. Change LW's listening port to 65000 (or you can try any port in the range of 49152 - 65535).
The port range of 49152-65535, it could possibly be any of those numbers in that range? Should I try any specific ones or just randomly type in numbers in that range?
Thanks again

Eek

I would also like to mention that i have been having some problems with my router for the past while. (wireless not working properly, settings not being changed or saved) and limewire works on my other computer but not the one im on. i have solved this problem before by doing system restore which i do not want to do all over again. after the restore about 1 month later (now) the problem came back.

Any ports in that range should be ok. I gave port 65000 as an example - that's fine to try first

I took the instructions for finding the UPnP setting from a port forwarding site... maybe I missed a step somewhere?
If you have a CD that came with your router, it should have the User Guide. Check that for how to get to the page for enabling UPnP.

Otherwise, you can download the User Guide here, by clicking on the red Get Manual button: ActionTec GT701-WG Manuals, Support and Troubleshooting - Wireless Routers
I think page 37 (Using Advanced Setup) onwards should show you how to
get to the page where you can enable UPnP if it isn't already.

If you still have no luck after that, try using another p2p program. There are links below to other free programs. FrostWire is probably the easiest to try first, as it's really similar to LW.

FrostWire

Phex

BearShare

Or if you still want to keep trying with LW, we can talk about port forwarding. It can seem a bit confusing though & a lot of people would rather not bother. Once you go through the process it's actually pretty simple but it can be very daunting to start with! Here's a basic look at port forwarding: PortForward.com - The port forwarding progression.

Has this just started since you updated to 5.4.6? You said that it happened once before & you were able to fix things by doing a system restore... last time it happened, was that also after updating to a new version of LW?

First thing I'd try is deleting LW's preferences folder. That's often a fix for connection problems after updating Just remember that LW must be completely closed before deleting the prefs folder. And see the help thread below for how to find out whether you've deleted that folder properly!
Check out this thread for info about deleting the prefs folder (there's a link specific to Vista): If LW 5 Will Not Connect

Otherwise you can try the other fixes in that thread.

Have you tried connecting to your router via ethernet cable (wired) rather than wirelessly?

I'm not even sure that your router supports UPnP... can't find any info. You may need to check the User Guide that came with the router.

Default Ready for more help!

OK! Soo i looked up the actiontech manual that you gave me the link to and I saw the part about the UPnP disabling and enabling, but my actual one doesn't have the button or section that says "UPnP" or anything that says universal plug and play! So im not sure whats up with that, I've looked it over rather thoroughly!
Soo.. I'm totally ready for some advanced advice, I feel. I bought LW pro, the latest version so I want it to work, and I definetly want to figure it out since I paid for a year, I have some time to use it! So I'm ready!
Step by step if possible! Email me!
