Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Thanks for your replies Lord.

I was loving v.4.18.8 until they came out with the first v.5, which I thought was terrible (why keep "fixing" LW when it wasn't broken?). After that, I continued to download the latest versions until 2010 when it was shut down, and liked the latest version of 5.x by then (don't remember the exact version number). LPE, as you know, was working fine until Java 7 came out. I'm still hoping for a newer, re-tweaked version of LW that can just be installed normally, without a shortcut to the jar file or to anything else, etc., and run with any new versions of Java that come out in the future. Hope to keep updated about that.

BTW: Checking the box that I want to receive email notices whenever something on the Gnutella forum is posted so as to keep up-to-date does not work. I have not been getting anything from Gnutella. I have to go back and log in myself to check to see if anyone has posted anything new/answers to my questions. Don't know why this option isn't working for me.

I've got v.4.18.8 installed with Java 7, Update 5, and FX 2.1.1 (which just installs automatically with it), and it's running OK. I have unchecked those file types I do NOT wish LW to filter out of my search results. Thanks for the input about the security concerns about each of the 4 file types you can check.

As for OOB searching, I'm still a little unclear. Does enabling it mean it might adversely affect my own internet connection performance, or does it mean it will not connect to some sources (peers?) of content I'm looking for, so that I will get a lower total number of/more limited results? I'm not noticing (yet) any performance problems having OOB enabled. ????

Thanks again.

re: OOB: If you have a broadband or better connection it will not affect your internet use. As far as LW is concerned, it would probably be rare but for some people there might be such situations it might affect LW's connection. In most cases OOB should be enabled, it should arguably help with search results. You might not notice any difference if it were enabled or disabled. Any OOB issues I guess would mostly affect dial-up or at a guess low-bandwidth satellite users.

Yes I agree, the earliest LW 5 should never have been released publicly, not as a standard version anyway, only as a beta. It was probably not until LW 5.2 or 5.3 that it was starting to shape up.

Sorry about the forum's email server. We have noticed the problem and it's an inconsistent problem. The server admin has not been able to pin-point the problem yet.

Thanks for all your help, Lord.

I've got LW v4.18.8 up and running with Java 7, Update 5/FX 2.1.1 installed. OOB searching enabled - will watch for internet issues. Previously, I left OOB disabled in LPE because of the warnings about internet connection performance problems. It would start downloading files, then keep dropping them and telling me to search again (i.e., "stalled"). Later, I'd reopen LPE, and it would re-establish some downloads from before, so I'd have to keep reopening it again and again to get it to download MOST of what I'd asked it to. Still unreliable though. Don't know if that is anything fixable. As you said, it's a dynamic situation that depends on who's online at any given time. We'll see how it goes with LW 4.18.8. Any chance a normal install and run of a tweaked version of LW will be created for download in the future that'll run with whatever the newest versions of Java are that are installed with it?

Thanks again

I have no idea if there are enthusiasts out there doing any development work with the LW source code. Though I've noticed the source code for LPE has been downloaded a couple of dozen times this year.
File_Girl71 might be able to tweak something but we shall see.
I'm not expecting to see anything in the near future, though would be good if there was.

I messaged File_Girl71 directly about the LPE vs. Java 7 problem. No response yet, at least. Maybe she's looking into it without responding directly to me. Wonder if there's any way to find out if she's got anything new going on?

I have done the Java fix and have downloaded both Java x32 and x64, and checked if I have both and both have been verified by the Java checker on their site. But when I try and open LimeWire, I get this error message:

LimeWire has encountered an internal error. It is possible for LW to recover and continue running normally. To continue using LW, close this window. If desired, you can click 'Show Bug' to look at the information about the error. (Which I did and here is the error information):

This is a typical LW-java error report, no problems about the size.

When you installed Java, did you set the installer to 'Run as Administrator' before installing? This is very important for Windows 7. Especially for connection issues. Might prove worthy to set LW to do the same by right-clicking the shortcut to LW and setting to Run as Administrator.

If not or unsure, re-install Java 7 (1.7) and set the installer as suggested to Run as Administrator, install over the previous installation of Java.
The direct link to the Java 7 'offline' installer here. . If specifically booting/running in 64-bit mode, then maybe this Java 7 for 64 bit only mode only if the previous installation link does not help and you definitely know for sure you only boot into Windows 64 bit mode.

Set both the Java installer AND LimeWire shortcut to Run as Administrator (sorry this example uses Java 6, but same principle) If necessary do the same with the LimeWire.jar shortcut (Tell us which one works for you.)

I have uninstalled Java, went to their site, downloaded the offline versions of Java and installed them again (I am familiar with it because Minecraft uses it), set them to "Run as administrator" and installed. Also did the same with the LimeWire file, (F_G's recommended edition), set to run as administrator.

Once I open LW after the .jar fix it still gives me the error, exactly the same one on startup. However it says it connects now, and I can search for things, it gives me options (along with the junk files that are obvious..), I click on it and it starts downloading, and says it does indeed download and finishes. I can even play it in the built-in player, and the whole song plays. But when I go and look for it in the directory, its not there..I right click the file and "Show on disk" and it says it cannot be found. Also when I try and change the directory to something other than the default, the settings screen freezes and doesn't allow me to click OK or to close the window, and I cannot click on anything else, so I have to end it in the task manager.

So..its like almost there, I have a connection, but it's apparently not saving the file on the disk, but yet I can still play it

EDIT: I can however right click the file when searching and select "Download as.." and save the file where I want, and it actually downloads. But I don't exactly want to find the directory every time, if I don't have to x_x

Ignore the 'You are Offline' message on the main window. Previously the main page would link to the LW website, however the link is now dead, thus it generates that error message.

When you open LW's Option settings up for the first time it will probably ask for you to allow firewall permission for Java. I believe this should be set to yes to allow private+public.

The settings (options) window is definitely an issue for you it seems. One thing you could try if willing, is to delete your preferences folder (save your downloads file): http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...ndows-7-a.html. Then when you start LW up next, you will need to do the set-up questions again and then try to re-do any changes of settings via the menu bar, Tools > Options.

As for the Locate on Disk tool, I found it seemed to work slowly. But after a while the folder would be flashing in the tray at bottom of screen. This worked for both incomplete and downloaded files.

Your error report in post #47 looks almost identical to one generated by an attempted File_Girl71 fix for the Java 7 issue a few weeks ago, though she removed that fix soon after posting it.
