Default Why Can People Upload At Quicker Speeds Than I Can Download At At?

Hey,
i'm wondering why i'm downlaoding at such a slow speed when people can upload quicker. I know the speed is limited by my crappy 56k modem but i try to download off T3 connections and its still slower. This never happened on napster.
if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

A lot of the folks that report they are on a T3 are really not... they just change the setting in limewire so they can get more connections.... I suspect many are running 56k modems.... which frustrates everyone.

Cool

Hello!

There is mainly 2 reasons to your problem/issue.

1.Many users falsely advertises T1 or T3 connections(They change their preference to T1 or T3 but in reality are only modem users or ADSL/Cable users) because they want to have the ability to make more connections up hence get a larger horizon to search whitin. This means that when you connect to them to download you will get a slower connection then expected if several persons is uploading from that person. To get true T1 or T3 hosts or even true ADSL/Cable hosts you should connect to the ones that are marked in a green color since those hosts speed are validated speeds or atleast most likely to be the ones they are claiming to be.

2.You are a modem user and for modem users the upload speed is maximum 33kbits/sec and maximum 56kbits/sec download speed and also those speeds are combined which means that if someone is uploading from you with a speed of lets say 20kbits/sec then you only have maximum 36kbits/sec bandwidth but most likely only 28kbits/sec available to yourself. And since broadband users (Cable/ADSL or up) are monsters to modem users they will grab as much of your capacity upon connection as they possibly can and the result is that they get decent download speeds from you but yourself has very little left to play with. This is not an issue for broadband users since our speed are separated which means that if someone is occupying all my upload bandwidth(800Kbits/sec) then me myself will still have 800kbits/sec left to play with for myself since the Uploads does not affect downloads for us broadband users.

The solution for you is to go to LimeWire preferences(Tools>Options>Uploads>basic)

Here you can change the maximum Upload Bandwidth that other hosts can occupy from you I would recommend you to set this value to 75%(everytime you want to download something but change it back to 100% everytime you do not use LW to download to be nice to people) so that you will always have the minimum maximum capacity of 23kbits/sec and the other that uploads from you will also have that speed as their maximum upload speed from you.

I thought DSL was supposed to be independent streams. And certainly it seemed so to me in previous versions of LW. But now, if anyone is uploading from me, my download speed takes a tremendous hit: from, say, 24K/sec. to 3. Several uploaders means that my connection to the network breaks down, the busy signals disappear, and sometimes my downloads interrupt as well. I have to stagger the times when I download and when I let people download from me. I wish I didn't have to make such a choice.

But when you download something a small amount of data needs to go the other way. Your computer tells the sender that you got that part of the file so it can send the next part. If the sender doesn't receive these replies it slows down or stops sending data. If your upload bandwidth is saturated by people getting files from you then those replies aren't sent as quickly.

This can happen when one person is uploading at a moderate speed, not even the whole bandwidth. I can always tell when someone connects: my download speed drops, though not every time.
