Default Newbie questions (but one who REALLY wants to contribute!)

Hi,
I must confess my naivete with this system...I never belonged to napster, but happened to come across this system through a friend (when I was driving myself nuts looking for a song on websites).
OK...I have three questions, if permitted. I have searched through these forums, but all the answers I've found are still fairly over-my-head (sadly), so I'm looking for basic, easy-to-understand answers...

1) I am running zonealarm...what do I need to do to facilitate people wishing to download FROM me, and also, to enable me to not be behind a firewall, thus preventing ME from downloading from others?

2) Currently, the only items in my "shared" folder are those items I've been able to download. I have NUMEROUS items in other areas of my hard drive - I suppose I would need to copy them into the 'shared' location, as well? In fact, does the fact that I am currently only 'sharing' 10 files prevent me from being able to download from some people? (it does seem as though 90% of my download requests come back as "Could Not Download").

3) I understand that, when trying to download from an IP listed in red, that it means THAT host is behind a firewall - I've read that I'm supposed to "push" my request. What does that mean/how do I do that? I'm going to suppose, also, that my configuring zonealarm would be helpful for this?

I will also provide my email addy, should someone wish to contact me off-board, but I have to assume that my questions are probably universal for many newbies...Hopefully I haven't offended anyone with what I can only assume, are semi-sophomoric questions...

Hi unreg,

1# Zone Alarm is no issue if you allow Limewire (Javajaw) to act as a server

2# Under options you can share any folder you like, and yes by sharing only 10 files, some clients might see you as a freeloader, and thus preventing you to download from them.

3#No need to configure Zonealarm (see#1) Limewire sends a push automatically if a direct contact can't be made

ok...
#1 - done...one thing down
#2 - that is something that is built into the program, correct? (i.e., they'll still come up as having the file, but when I go to download, their PROGRAM will see that I have only 10 files, and will reject me...) - oh well, I guess I'd best start transferring some files into that directory, or adjusting the options...
#3 - ok...I thought a 'push' was something "I" needed to do - I didn't realize that Limewire did that automatically...

Thanks again for the help!

Chris

Chris:

Don't forget that if you add your downloaded files to your shared directory it won't take long before you have a lot to share.
