Can't play downloaded movies!

I downloaded the DivX player, and I've been trying and trying to play any movie I can download on it, but none seem to be working. I've tried all file types, but I thought that .avi files would play for sure and they all keep saying that the file name is bad. Also, what kind of program do I need to play mpg and mpeg files? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

avi files

I have tried downloading this nimo codec pack thing and I have no idea how to use it now. I can't really tell if the thing is installed properly or not. I'm trying to use the Wmp - is there some pluging file I need to put the codecs directly into?

I use a Mac and have QuickTime 5. It will play almost all mpg (mpeg) and most avi. For the problem avi, I use DivX Doctor II. It will fix audio (if there seems to be none) and video (if you see a white screen). It's a simple drag-and-drop application. There are many threads here in the forums regarding this program. Do a search here for "avi" or "Divx" and you should be able to get some help there. As for mpgs that just don't even start to run, well... I just trash them.

If you have those "larger" mpgs that only play for one minute, then you should try Rosetta. It's a $15 (or is it $10?) shareware fee, but very easy to use. It will split the video and then you can paste it back together. I had tried bbDEMUX, but that splits it into two different files - an audio file and a video file that you have to try to get going at the same time. Sucked. I've had no problems with Rosetta. It's worth the $. In my opinion.

Do a Google (or whatever) search for "Rosetta" and "DivX Doctor II" and check them out.

Hope this helps.

A little more information would be helpful in order to help you. What types of movies are you trying to play? mpg? avi? rm? asf?

What are they doing? Just not opening? No video? No audio?

What player(s) do you have?

Post back and maybe someone can help.

After I installed the latest NVIDIA drivers for my video card, I lost the ability to view mpeg2 movies. I have tried reinstalling my video playback software, 5 or 6 of them, and none of them will playback mpeg2 video anymore. I don't get it.
