I have a cable modem, and I just installed the newest version of Limewire. I have a 250 kbps upload bandwidth so what should I set my download and upload bandwidth to? I am running behind Windows SP2 firewall but i can turn that off and put on Norton firewall. Which should I use for the best download speed? Currently, my video downloads arent going any faster than 12 kbps. Music is about 60-80 range.

When I decide to change from "cable/dsl" to "T1" my music downloads seem to faster than 100kbps and my videos about 25-40kbps. But thats only sometimes.

I also have a shared internet connection. I cannot get on the internet unless my other computer is turned on. We are connected by these Netgear Powerline USB Adapters XA601.

Please help me get the best out of Limewire before I decide to switch to a different program.

THE RESULTS OF MY SPEED TEST:

Your download speed : 2508636 bps, or 2449 kbps.
A 306.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 255395 bps, or 249 kbps

According to what you have indicated you are already able to download and I assume upload as well. Since your buddy is also using limewire and you guys are all sharing the same T1 circuit. Then why don't you try the following test and then post your results here.


#1 Create/Rename a file to something unique.
This file should be at least 5-10MB

Example: DataTx01.AVI and DataTx02.AVI

#2 One file should be located on your buddies computer and the other one on your computer.

#3 Connect to Gnutella using limewire and use the following search term to locate the files.

search = DataTx01.avi

or

search = avi 01 tx data

Basically, you want to search for the file that exists on the other computer. NOT the one located on your computer. This should result in an exact match.

#4 Download the file.

#5 Repeat steps 3-4 from other computer.

#6 Post the results of your test on the forum.

Basically, tell us what happened.

Just downloaded a large movie file from him - 708MB took about a half hour with speeds between 150 and 950 KB/s, averaging above 800. He downloaded a 9MB Mp3 from me and got about 300 KB/s. It probably would have gone faster, but it didnt have enough time to. Our network is configured for filesharing amongst clients, I'm not sure how this is going to give you any info...

If you did the aforementioned using limewire without changing your configuration then it helps by telling me that the problem is not with limewire. However, if you performed the tests outside of limewire then it doesn't help to solve the problem.

Here's what I suspect based on what you've said before.

I think the problem is limited to something that has been discussed several times in this thread alone. That is, you cannot download faster than the person can send the data. Therefore if a person is connected using a modem and you have a T1 your downloads will be limited to that of the modem. Alternatively, if a person with a modem is attempting to download from you they will only be able to pull the data at a rate of 56Kb or less. Because limewire shows the speeds in bytes it will be 7KB or less.

Finally, if you are using a school network are you 100% sure they are not doing traffic-management?

So many people are wondering why they aren't getting any uploads. I'm here at just past midnight in my part of the world and am not getting any uploads, tons of 'transfer interrupted' which I assume is from the other end, i.e. not my fault.
If you're worried that your files aren't available, just look at the bottom left corner of your LimeWire screen, under 'Quality'.
It will say "Sharing XX files". If the number is zero, then something is wrong. But, if you, like, me, are sharing 837 files, then that means they are available. So don't worry, you're not a freeloader, it just means people aren't helping themselves to your files in particular.

Well, it seems that your assumption is wrong. Like you, I share tons of files and got tons of transfer interrupted. Never any uploads completed. I changed OS from XP to Win2003Server and now everything is fine. I have 5 computers, 4 of which are running xppro, none of them upload files. But of course, now this one does, using the new OS. Nothing else has changed as far as hardware, routers, antivirus, firewalls (both software and hardware). So, it must be the way Limewire works with the operating system (XP).

I'm using limewire with windows xp and a broadband connection. My ip address as a host comes up as 192 168 etc. How can i change this. thanks

I run a P2P-CDN 20% of it runs on Windows XP. There are two things I can assure you of.


#1 There is no problem running limewire or getting it to upload on a properly configured XP machine.

#2 You are incorrect in your assumptions.

Leeware, then perhaps you can tell the rest of the community with this on-going problem what configuration changes are necessary. Every suggestion in this forum has resulted in no-change for others as well as myself. Changing OS does correct the problem. I tried changing to win2003server on one of the other systems running xppro and sure enough, it started uploading files. So, I guess what I'm saying is:

If you are sharing files, and no one is uploading from you, you have a problem, not that they don't want your files but the problem is on your end not theirs. Obviously, it shows them requesting files from you and their trasnfer gets interrupted after 3-5 seconds. So they want your files, but your OS is interrupting the transfer.

Now, Leeware, would you be so kind to tell us what configuration would correct this?
