So many people are wondering why they aren't getting any uploads. I'm here at just past midnight in my part of the world and am not getting any uploads, tons of 'transfer interrupted' which I assume is from the other end, i.e. not my fault.
If you're worried that your files aren't available, just look at the bottom left corner of your LimeWire screen, under 'Quality'.
It will say "Sharing XX files". If the number is zero, then something is wrong. But, if you, like, me, are sharing 837 files, then that means they are available. So don't worry, you're not a freeloader, it just means people aren't helping themselves to your files in particular.

Well, it seems that your assumption is wrong. Like you, I share tons of files and got tons of transfer interrupted. Never any uploads completed. I changed OS from XP to Win2003Server and now everything is fine. I have 5 computers, 4 of which are running xppro, none of them upload files. But of course, now this one does, using the new OS. Nothing else has changed as far as hardware, routers, antivirus, firewalls (both software and hardware). So, it must be the way Limewire works with the operating system (XP).

I'm using limewire with windows xp and a broadband connection. My ip address as a host comes up as 192 168 etc. How can i change this. thanks

I run a P2P-CDN 20% of it runs on Windows XP. There are two things I can assure you of.


#1 There is no problem running limewire or getting it to upload on a properly configured XP machine.

#2 You are incorrect in your assumptions.

Leeware, then perhaps you can tell the rest of the community with this on-going problem what configuration changes are necessary. Every suggestion in this forum has resulted in no-change for others as well as myself. Changing OS does correct the problem. I tried changing to win2003server on one of the other systems running xppro and sure enough, it started uploading files. So, I guess what I'm saying is:

If you are sharing files, and no one is uploading from you, you have a problem, not that they don't want your files but the problem is on your end not theirs. Obviously, it shows them requesting files from you and their trasnfer gets interrupted after 3-5 seconds. So they want your files, but your OS is interrupting the transfer.

Now, Leeware, would you be so kind to tell us what configuration would correct this?

There are several things you can do to mitigate problem with your online activities. Especially as it relates to P2P. Let me share a few suggestions.

#1 Are you sharing from an environment where you don't control the resources? That is, at a school or from work or an ISP that is not P2P friendly.

The reason I listed this one first is I've had people to contact me with problem downloading and uploading files. That ended up being a problem where some upstream packet shaping application or hardware was in place to discourage such activities. Therefore, it would be helpful for everyone on this board and elseware to make sure that this is not the case before complaining that the application does not work.


#2 Understand your setup. That is, are you using NAT? i.e. your ip address is 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x or 10.x.x.x. Are you Firewalled? That is using XP or another third part Firewall products? Are you directly connected to the Internet?


Here's another thing that I've seen that causes a lot of problems for inexperienced users. If you are using NAT then you DO NOT NEED ADDITIONAL FIREWALLS. Unless of course you wish to block outbound request. Some users feel like they are better protected if they on top of NAT use the XP firewall + 2 or three third party firewalls. Trust me this is an overly complicated configuration with no real benefits.

Here are my suggestions if you are having problems getting your files uploaded into the network.

#1 Evaluate your situation and make adjustments accordingly.
Simplify your configuration by removing unnecessary firewalls.

#2 I know that for a fact LimeWire works just fine in a NATed environment.

#3 If and only if you are directly connected to the Internet and are using Windows XP ICF. There are two ways to configure it so that it works correctly with limewire.

3a) When you start limewire the system will prompt you to whether you want to allow the program or not. If you select the option to allow then it creates an exception to allow the program. Everything including uploads should work fine with this configuration.

3b) The other way is to go into the firewall settings in XP and create two entries.

3b1) LimeWire TCP Server 6346
3b2) LimeWire UDP Server 6346

Everything should work fine with this configuration.

Finally, #4 verify your LimeWire configuration that is,
open limewire go into /tools/options/uploads/slots make sure the Uploads Per Person Value is greater than 0.


This is a leecher configuration that keeps people from uploading files from you.

Interdiction Companies -- I mentioned this several times in this thread however, I sometimes get the feeling that people have no idea what I'm talking about. So, once again.

There are companies who are paid to inject bogus popular movie files on P2P networks. These companies make it nearly impossible to ever successfully download a movie from their servers. The point of this is to discourage users from using P2P as a way to getting copyrighted movie content. Thus judging by your post their efforts are relatively effective.

Well, excuse the heck out of me. I was trying to interject a little friendly advice.
LeeWare, thank you for the assurance that I am doing everything possible to make sure that people can get my files.
Perhaps I should have mentioned in my previous post that I do have successful uploads, there are just very few of them.
BTW, I have a 4 year old Gateway running Windows ME. I have no problems with LimeWire. Downloading the newest Java (1.4 I think?) seemed to really help.
