Start with the Basics There are several things you can do to mitigate problem with your online activities. Especially as it relates to P2P. Let me share a few suggestions. #1 Are you sharing from an environment where you don't control the resources? That is, at a school or from work or an ISP that is not P2P friendly. The reason I listed this one first is I've had people to contact me with problem downloading and uploading files. That ended up being a problem where some upstream packet shaping application or hardware was in place to discourage such activities. Therefore, it would be helpful for everyone on this board and elseware to make sure that this is not the case before complaining that the application does not work. #2 Understand your setup. That is, are you using NAT? i.e. your ip address is 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x or 10.x.x.x. Are you Firewalled? That is using XP or another third part Firewall products? Are you directly connected to the Internet? Here's another thing that I've seen that causes a lot of problems for inexperienced users. If you are using NAT then you DO NOT NEED ADDITIONAL FIREWALLS. Unless of course you wish to block outbound request. Some users feel like they are better protected if they on top of NAT use the XP firewall + 2 or three third party firewalls. Trust me this is an overly complicated configuration with no real benefits. Here are my suggestions if you are having problems getting your files uploaded into the network. #1 Evaluate your situation and make adjustments accordingly. Simplify your configuration by removing unnecessary firewalls. #2 I know that for a fact LimeWire works just fine in a NATed environment. #3 If and only if you are directly connected to the Internet and are using Windows XP ICF. There are two ways to configure it so that it works correctly with limewire. 3a) When you start limewire the system will prompt you to whether you want to allow the program or not. If you select the option to allow then it creates an exception to allow the program. Everything including uploads should work fine with this configuration. 3b) The other way is to go into the firewall settings in XP and create two entries. 3b1) LimeWire TCP Server 6346 3b2) LimeWire UDP Server 6346 Everything should work fine with this configuration. Finally, #4 verify your LimeWire configuration that is, open limewire go into /tools/options/uploads/slots make sure the Uploads Per Person Value is greater than 0. This is a leecher configuration that keeps people from uploading files from you. Hope this helps.

User Education Interdiction Companies -- I mentioned this several times in this thread however, I sometimes get the feeling that people have no idea what I'm talking about. So, once again. There are companies who are paid to inject bogus popular movie files on P2P networks. These companies make it nearly impossible to ever successfully download a movie from their servers. The point of this is to discourage users from using P2P as a way to getting copyrighted movie content. Thus judging by your post their efforts are relatively effective.

Obtaining LimeWire Pro If you purchased LimeWire Pro then you should have link to the purchased product. The link is good for six months. I am also sure you could contact the folks at LimeWire to help you out.

LeeWare, thank you for the assurance that I am doing everything possible to make sure that people can get my files. Perhaps I should have mentioned in my previous post that I do have successful uploads, there are just very few of them. BTW, I have a 4 year old Gateway running Windows ME. I have no problems with LimeWire. Downloading the newest Java (1.4 I think?) seemed to really help. |

Hi joyrider, I was wondering if you can do a small test for us after LW has been running for perhaps 20 to 30 mins: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is your result True/False? If it's true then nothing to worry about. If it's false, then there may be something partially blocking others from uplding from you. It may be an internal firewall or it may be a built in NAT firewall inside your modem or router or both. In that case you'd need to configure your firewalls to give LW full access or do what's known as port forwarding to allow port 6346 to be open for others. |

bug report test Received incoming this session=true. BTW I leave LW on all the time (I have a cable connection). No problems, then, eh, mate? This was the first time I've looked at the sample bug report. Fascinating. It also showed I am not acting as an ultrapeer, which I do not have that disabled in options. Is cable not fast enough? I looked in FAQ and userguide. Just curious, if you could direct me to more info I would appreciate it. Thanks again guys for all your very useful information. |

Upload Statistics My content distribution network is run on limewire. I took a sample of my upload traffic and found the following results. Out of 35,000 uploads only 50% end in success the rest fail. 50% or 17,500 are interrupted about 300 or 2.6% simply stall. I don't know what you success / failure rate is? However, it would be helpful to know how your node is performing.

Now that I have switched to Win2003Server, I let Limewire run all night last night and here are the results. I share 3021 files. I had 489 upload requests. I had 487 completed requests. 2 Transfers interrupted. On the old WinXPPRO system I usually had 99.5% transfer interrupted. Out of 500 upload requests, maybe 1 or two would complete. They were both in my immediate IP addr range. (yyy.yyy.nnn.nnn) Where the y's are the same numbers as my IP addr. However, I don't think I was the only one uploading to them. |

I have two questions: 1) My ipaddress with 'ipconfig' is always the same, but I've been led to understant it is not an address that can be accessed. Does the ip address from 'whatismyip' remain the same all the time when you are on the internet via a host isp? I use DSL with the local phone company, and if I force the ipaddress, I want to know that it is a constant. 2) I will attempt to find the answer to this one myself, but just in case I remain too dumb, how do I force the ipaddress? Thanks for any help. Dev |
