err yeh....well im sorry if this has been asked already but there are 30+ pages. however im a new user of limewire (just got it yesterday) and i wish to know how to 'force my IP' and how to find out if im already doing so. if you need any information just ask me but im running limewire on windows with nortan antivirus and windows defender.

Thank you LeeWare for having started this thread to try and help users out with their LimeWire.
I have followed all the steps stated in this post, but my downloads still don't seem to be speeding up.
Movies download at 1-2KB/s, and music files at 10-15KB/s.
I also don't see any uploads.
I am behind a firewall, and don't know anything about 'forcing' my ip.
Can anybody help me? Thank you.

There's no 'force IP' option any more, it's been replaced with the option to manually port forward.

Connection problems? Check here first!
Make sure your Norton firewall's configured properly & that the XP firewall is off. You may have an internal firewall within your modem/router, there's a lot of info in the sticky. If your router supports UPnP then enable it & tick also within LW's options > advanced > firewall config. See if that fixes the firewall problem. If not, you might have to manually port forward.

What are your details (excuse the repeat questions)

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

I ran a test suggested by Lord of the Rings to see if it was a problem with my firewall (I can't remember in which thread though, srry):
open LW > Tools > Options > Bug Reports > View Example: if next to 'Recieved incoming this session' is written 'false' than LW is having problems with a firewall.

That is the case here. So I then checked Norton Internet Security, but LW was ok (it said 'Permit All' for LW). I also verified that Windows firewall was disabled.

I am trying to sort out the UPnP problem, but here are my details in the meantime:

OS - Windows XP Professional, version 2002, service pack 2
LW - 4.10.9 PRO
Java - 1.5.0_03
Firewall - Norton Internet Security 2005
Router - Netgear (don't know which model yet, I'm checking on it)
ISP - where find out who your ISP is?
Connection - Cable (shared with another computer) from home
This is not my first time w/ LW

I guess you also see the firewall icon (brick wall in front of the blue earth)?
Re your ISP (internet service provider)... who do you pay for your internet access?

Yes, I see a firewall icon in LW.

I was looking through the thread you advised, and my router is a Netgear WGR614v3. On the link it says UPnP is enabled by default on this model: "Netgear: Some NetGear devices have UPnP enabled by default. WGU624 WGT634U WGT624 WGR614 MR814 have UPnP enabled by default."

I went to see (at http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm) how I could manually port forward, but it says I have to create a static IP adress. Isn't that dangerous? The purpose of dynamic IP's being to render ur computer less traceable right?

PortForward says: "So when you start assigning static ip addresses, you need to assign a static ip address for every computer on your network." Why is this? Is their any way to set up a static IP on only one of the computers using the network?

I'm not too sure about the static IP for every computer but I'll ask someone... keep an eye on this thread
If your router has UPnP enabled by default, did you select Use UPnP from within LW's options > advanced > firewall config? Apply to save a change. You could try this & see what happens, give LW a while (say 1/2 hour) to settle down & see if the firewall icon disappears.

Yes, 'Use UPnP' is selected in LW, speed doesn't seem to be changing (still in the 0-3KB/s) and the firewall icon is still there.
Is the port under 'Listen on Port' (LW > Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewall Config) of any importance, or is it ok to put any number?

The listening port must be the same as the port that you've allowed for Gnutella within your software firewall & also the same as the port used if you manually port forward. The default port is 6346. You can change ports if you need to (eg if an ISP is blocking or filtering certain ports).

I'm port forwarding through my modem but still have a dynamic IP. As far as I know, the static IP is only for the device you're forwarding a port through. Is the other computer using LW too? I'm not sure whether you'd need to set up a second static IP if the other comp isn't using LW. But I know pretty much nothing about networks... I've asked someone to take a look at this when he's online next.

Remember that you can only download as fast as your connection & the other host's connection will allow. So try to download from multiple hosts with 4 star connections. Some ISPs do use traffic shaping to limit bandwidth for p2p... did you find out who your ISP is?

This thread has a lot of info about configuring LW for best performance, this can sometimes help to increase download speed
