very slow downloads with new limewire 2.8?
 

I have a modem, 56k (cannot have cable etc due to remote area in which i live).
I have just been using the new version of limewire, 2.8 and my download speeds have halved or worse. I was getting around anywhere from 3-5kb/s and downloading up to 3 files at the same time with average speeds of around 3-3.5kb/s. I basically had very good success with downloads (for a modem!).
Unfortunately since changing to the new version it has been HELL to say the least, download speed is anywhere from 0-2 and if im lucky 3kb/s!!. Worse still, i can only download 1 file at a time (it doesnt seem to like 2-3 downloads?) and most downloads drop out!
Can someone please help? i have tried to optimise things but with no success, any suggestions for what i can do?
I have not changed anything else on the computer, so it is definetly the software and possibly, hopefully just the settings that need changing?

Could you please clarify what you were using before:

1. Were you using an older version of Limewire and, if so, which version?

2. How many Ultrapeers are you connecting to? (You need to enable the View menu-option for the "Connections" screen.)

3. Which version of Java do you have installed? The latest is 1.4.1 and it's supposed to be much faster than the 1.3.x series.

4. Finally, are you monitoring your modem's line-speed (aka connect speed0? I don't mean the "link-speed" which is the communication rate between your computer and the modem (and is always 57,600 or 112k). If the modem is using a generic driver, it will report the link-speed rather than line-speed. For instance, if the "Connect" speed is consistently "57,600" then you're not seeing the actual speed. In reality, you'll never see anything above 52,000 and it should vary.

All that said, it's still possible that you've found a new problem in the code. Do you have "Act as Ultrapeer" disabled? That would really screw things up if your modem was trying to act as an Ultrapeer.

The last version was 2.55 pro and yes i have the latest java version which was recommended during the installing of the latest version of limewire.
As for ultrapers i am connecting to, to be honest i dont know, i do have the 'connections' window open, but i do not understand it beyond 'outgoing' and 'incoming'.
'Act as ultrapeer' is enabled as recommended by the software, as you have said this may be my problem.

I will try this out tonight.

If you're on a modem, you should not be acting as an Ultrapeer. I would assume, however, that setting your Speed=Modem would block Ultrapeer mode even if you have it enabled (the checkbox).
