For the first time tonight, I noticed that I was connected as an ultrapeer. I have a broadband connection, but I am also behind a firewall and a router! I have managed to configure myself to allow sharing of my files, but why would the system use someone so heavily gated as an untrapeer? Just curious.

That means you have received an incoming connection at some point. Either you were running more than one instance of LimeWire in your LAN and those two connected to each other or you are not as firewalled as you think.
