slow slow slow

I finally got a version that work w/o any problems 2.8.6 and it is so slow. I havent got anything to go higher then 20-30kbs. I am on DSL and when I could use version 1.7 i got 50-70kbs. Whats the deal how come the new versions suck so bad.
