new Limewire version same prob Hello all, Dunno if there is finally a fix for the "could not downlaod, awaiting sources" but I just paid mo munnie for version 2.9.10 thinking it would fix the prob. But noooooo. Still can't get more than one song. Has anyone solved this? I am now running OSX 10.2.6. So the prob can't be the older versions of Mac OS and Limewire. what are we techno flunkies to do? Acquisition is not an option. Never gotten one single tune from it. I am so sad. iTunes does not have most of my requests. Limewire does! *sigh* |

Wow, Guys This really is a thread of doom and gloom, isn't it? I'm currently running LW2.9.10 on OS10.2.6 and have noticed an improvement in performance. Although I'm still averaging about a 5% success rate in actually making a connection with a willing host, I'm currently getting more than 50% of those connections to a complete download. I think that's wonderful! Just think — a 2.5% success rate overall! And yet you seem to be worried because you are hitting a few "Cannot download" messages? Surely you didn't expect Gnutella to give up her treasures without you paying some form of price, did you? Common, Guys, attempt to download from hundreds of sources per session. Most will not download but some will. Adopt a flexible search strategy, experiment with Limewire's resources, learn from your experiences and soon you will have a library of copyright free material to be proud of. |

Hi Herbwx If you check back through all my posts, you will find the statistics of my experience using Limewire are well documented. I can assure you that no sarcasm was nor is intended. As an old guy, I simply cannot relate to the apparent need for instant-gratification that most people under forty years seem to have these days. I graft for my downloads and, by my standards, have been pretty successfull. If you feel that you are going to get easier pickings elsewhere, good luck to you. For those that remain, I offer no more than the simple encouragement that, through hard work, you will prevail. Last edited by David91; May 15th, 2003 at 02:34 PM. |

Re: Hi Herbwx Well, not only am I not under 40.... I'm not under 50 !! But when one upgrades a program to the "newer" (read: improved?) version and it simply won't work, what is one to do ? It's not a matter of instant gratification. Zero downloads over the course of a week is no-gratification. My setup had to have been correct as I made no changes except for the upgrade. And as soon as I downloaded a different program, the new program worked -- and continues to work -- flawlessly. I wish I could've stuck with LW; but sometimes a new experience is better in the long-run. This is just one person's story; your mileage may differ. -Herb Quote:

Hi Herb Before we disappear too far off-topic, I offer this slim justification for my comment about under forties: http://media.guardian.co.uk/newmedia...957033,00.html which publishes the latest research showing that only 24% of p2p users are over 45 years. I regret that our experience in using LW does not coincide. I have struggled with it but prevail. I wish you well elsewhere. David |

I don't get yr point... You seem to miss the point david91. Some of us have been using Limewire for many months with no problem like the one we are in now. And I have "paid" for LW. First I paid $10 and now I paid $7.50 which is a good deal. My iTunes library is full of shared music I got from LW. But it doesn't make me "proud". It's what I havta do to get music in a market that is controlled by monopolies and huge markups (which have already been etablished as illegal in US courts). Apple's solution 0f .99 a song is a good deal but the selection is still slim and yes, the music industry is fuming again because iTunes 4 can allow for peer to peer downloads. So methinks you are way off base. This problem "awaiting resources" is new and different and still hasn't been explained by those in the know (I guess that would be you). Is the "awaiting resources" an app problem (installation, permissions, directories, resources?) or is is it strictly a download prob from the host? What resources are waited? BTW: s'cuse the ignorant (in my case) over 40 instant gratification brat 'tude, but how do you download the same tune from 100 hosts? And why do you feel so smug in bragging about some skill you have? oi vei. |

Ah, good, a debate! For the record, I have been using Limewire for just over three months. I have observed the download failure message change its wording and read the threads where this change was discussed. As I understand it, the purpose of the change was to signal that Limewire will no longer requery automatically, but the substance of the message remained unchanged, namely, that the source you have tried will not download anything or any more to you unless you do something about it. So unless I have fundamentally misunderstood the situation (which is not as uncommon as I like to think) what you complain of is not a new problem. In 2001/2, the published research shows that only about one third of disclosed Gnutella connections were real and, of those, most failed within 27 seconds. For a variety of reasons, the situation has worsened. To achieve success (and, yes, I do admit to feeling quite pleased that I have prevailed in these adverse conditions) you have to be very active. I search and hit all the disclosed hosts for the track I want. Those that come up "awaiting sources" I restart the download because the initial rejection may have been due to a queueing problem at a busy host. If that fails, I immediately move on to the next host. My record for simultaneous downloads of a single track is eight. During any one session, I will make hundreds of download requests for different tracks, hundreds of kill download and restart download key strokes, repeating the searches to refresh stalled downloads on a routine basis (the autocomplete facility is very useful for this but always amend to match the typography of a host that has started to download to you), host browsing to add an additional string to the download request strategy, etc, etc. In other words, it is like playing a computer game with non-stop activity, always ready to kill and restart the current downloads from the original points in the carefully managed search boxes the moment any one connection is lost. To maximise success in adverse conditions requires effort. I commend you for paying for Limewire. All shareware projects of quality should be supported one way or another. As to the entrenched interests of larger corporations and their understandable desire to protect their profits, extending the conversation would take us too far off-topic. |

Me. too! Updated 2 days ago to OS 10.2.6, and am getting the same message you all are. Been using LW since AudioGalaxy's demise. I recently turned 60, so I'm not quite in the gotta have it now group, but it seems to me that all the work described by David91 is more than I'm interested in. I thought that the program is supposed to do the work. No? The best was Audio Galaxy. Why can't LW do what they did? (I'm no geek, so I don't know why some apps. work better than others.) At any rate, being unable to download does not encourage me to pay up. Any solutions out there? I also use iSwipe, which is faster than LW, especially now! TIA for any suggestions. MRH: |
