Newbie query about Sharing

Hi,
I have a query about sharing file. If I have a shared folder on my PC, does it mean that people can access it whenever I am online ? Or can they access it only when my Gnutella application is on ?
I use Limewire..

I am asking this question cos I use my laptop at work as well and I do not want to share my files while at work using the office network.
