Question Download speed

I admit I'm not the smartest cookie in the jar when it comes to these file sharing programs. Too, this is not a complaint because, after all, LimeWire IS free.

A friend introduced me to LimeWire. While I do enjoy it and have downloaded many files, she seems to have much better connection speeds than I.

We both have Cox cable - she in Phoenix and me in Las Vegas. She tells me she downloads at 50-100 kps virtually ALL the time. Mine are almost always far below 50 (usually 1-8 kbs).

I didn't change any LimeWire settings that I know of. Is there anything I can do to increase my d/l speed? My d/l times using a stand alone browser (IE 5.5) for example are just fine. Any possibility my local cable company has anything to do with my LimeWire downloads specifically? (Doubt that.)

At what rate do others download at? Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Default follow-up

Soon after I posted the above I found a message posted in May. Seems my d/l speed (and only being able to d/l about 1/10 of the files I request) is not abnormal. True?

Also, if true, why does this friend in Phoenix ALWAYS d/l at 50-100 kbs?? I have tried downloading from T3, T1, cable and modem connections. Very rarely do I ever d/l at 50 kbs - and strangely, as my friend has also found, many of the fastest downloads are shown as "modem" connections.

Again, clarification and help appreciated.

Yet again, this has to do with my rant about the allowance for bandwidth. People can lower the allowance to practically zero, and there is nothing you can do about it. What I would suggest is lower your bandwidth also, just so you can dish out what everyone else is also.

...I'm not the smartest guy around. I don't understand why anyone would *care* what bandwidth was alloted to file sharing - unless one is just a jerk -- in which case they should simply do what I do and move the files they don't wish to share OUT of their "Shared" folder.

I leave my bandwidth wide open. It poses NO problem to me as I muti-task while connected to LW. I don't understand why anyone who is here to both get and share files wouldn't do the same.

Logically, it seems to me if you don't wish to share files then MOVE THEM! Am I missing something here?
