This is a re-post cause I don't think this is being called to everyone''s attention as is should be....

This is just a comment, no one need respond, though I am sure some of you will. I remember seeing a thread a few days ago having to do with how much we would normally allow for uploads from our computers. The default, as you all should know, is 50%. THIS OPTION IS NOT HELPFUL TO ANYONE, AND SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT. The reason behind my opinion is that, in effect, since most of us limewire users probably leave it at 50%, or even change it to a lower percentile, we are dooming ourselves to slow downloads across the board. Say, mine is set at 50%, and I am downloading a file from anothers who also has theirs set to 50%. A person is also downloading from me. See, even though I am saving bandwidth by not allowing my uploads to consume as much, my downloads are slower because everyone else has their upload bandwidth set low. So, in reality, nothing is being saved at all. This option is just causing slower downloads for everyone, and should be removed in future versions of limewire.

I never really liked LimeWire. It seemed like no one ever uploaded from me when I used it, no matter how much bandwidth I allotted.

Limewire seems to take your total bandwidth and then shares 50% so if you are on DSL your total is both up and down and it shares 50% or "all" of your upload... I actually have to throttle this down because I am on ADSL and I am capped at 15Kb/s anyways... so placing my slider at 50% makes it impossible for me to surf or u/l anything.. I leave mine at about 27% and that gives 10Kb/s.... which is better than nothing.... a lot of people out there are on ADSL or a capped cable modem so really that 50% is probably more than they are supposed to have to offer so I wouldn't worry about it... besides... it should be up to the person sharing what the bandwidth usage should be not the person d/l'ing...

Millhouse wins the prize here! He points out that LimeWire does in fact use 100%+ of most users upload bandwidth. Because upload bandwidth is generally less than download bandwidth on cable modems and DSL, this issue is generally mute. I believe that our newer versions will set unlimited upload bandwidth by default as well.

Millhouse also points out correctly that users could have a problem surfing with lots of bandwidth being used up. This will be less of an issue in the future but I think a low bandwidth consumption toggle might be good.

Maybe so, but one person's upload is another's download. I have a cable modem and I get speed's from anywhere between 5KB/s to 100KB/s. Now, as far as the regular ol' dial ups are concerned, I'm sure I can speak for everyone here with a high speed connection (which seems to be most of us, unless everyone is lying) that unless forced into an absolutely desperate situation I will never download from a dial up. And dial up is one thing as far as the uploads. That right there should say they probably don't have to worry about getting too many uploads at a time. I, on the other hand, along with others experience no lag in browsing when downloading numerous songs. So I, along with others, have no reason to set my allowance low, and neither do most of us on here. Take a look the next time you do a search. How many regular modems do you see? I bet even from the ones you do see, some of them are lying purposefully to discourage uploading from them. It all stems right back to the "take take take" attitude that seems to run rampant on this board. People complain about the downloads being too slow on limewire, but then when the time comes to set that allowance, what do they do? I think we all know the answer.

Setting upload bandwidth to unlimited by default and allowing parallel downloading from multiple sources (not yet in the works) may help this in the future.

Maybe the config menu isn't reporting the right upload speed on ADSL.
I'm on an ADSL giving me a max upload of 13.5 kb. The config at 50% said 22 kb so I throttled it to 12 kb.
But then I figured out that none was uploading with a speed more than 1.5 kb. So I changed to 80% - the config menu reported more than double the speed I actually have, but real uploads are up to 10 kb and all is working fine.
