Default apple airport - interferes with downloads!

I have a cable internet connection and an airport - last night i decided to try downloading plugging straight into the cable modem with an ethernet cable. I instantly went from 4 to 5 connections listed in the connection window to about 50. Also my downloads were way faster and more reliable, not to mention i have people uploading now, which never used to happen. I also was getting file corrupted messages on several downloads before and haven't got one since (i downloaded a bunch of music and four programs last night) Has anone else had this experience? Just thought people should know, I have'nt seen any warnings about using an airport to download anywhere.
