more questions on download speeds (sorry) :) i was wondering if anyone could tell me what a good download speed is for a 56k modem. reason i ask is because at the moment my downloads only shift at about 3k a sec,4 or 5 if i'm very lucky. i do know that dial-up modems really are slow by todays standards but what i'm actually concerned about is the fact that even though i only download files from broadband and cable type connections with lots of sources available,my downloads are often constantly dropping below 3k and refusing to pick up the pace. i have tried limiting the amount of bandwidth used by others for uploads and also reducing the number of downloads i do at the same time from 4 to just 2. none of this seems to have had any effect. if anyone knows of a way that i could improve the quality of my download speed i would be ever so gratefull. |
5 Kbs is the absolute maximum to get out of a 56K modem. This is the total amount of both your up and download speed. The most economic way of downloading on Gnutella when using a 56K modem is when your download is running to disconnect from the network. This way no bandwith is used for network traffic, and all your modem's capacity is used for the download. |
running to disconnect can anyone please tell me what Raaf means by running to disconnect. |

In other words: Once you have a download going, you disconnect yourself from the network |

I agree that it is some sort of leeching, but I have a weak spot for true 56K users. I remember my frustration and suffering of the day's before I had cable ;) And about the numbers, I am lo-tech, sorry about that :o |

But nowadays these users are shielded by Superpeers, the search traffic a 56k user have to handle is very low compared to the "old" days. ;) Quote:

thanx for the replies u guys. i do feel kinda bad though because i would very much like to share my files with everyone as u have been real helpfull and polite,i just can't get enough net time between downloads to be of any help and i need every scrap of bandwidth i can get :( also,i may sound stupid for asking this but when you guys talk about disconnecting from the network, are you simply talking about stopping others from uploading files or do u mean disconnecting limewire?? told ya it would be a stupid question:) |
File menu->Disconnect/Connect. That just disengages you from the searching network--your up and downloads still continue. You only have to be connected to the network to search and start downloads, and to allow your files to be found. |
thanx for the info dude :) |
