why 99% of files unusable ?

I've got a mac because everything works. Using this program makes me think I'm using windows because every file but one I've downloaded is corrupted or doesn't open ( sit and dmg included ) Does anyone have any suggestions because I'm just wasting my time and computer ? thanks
